Need alcoholic formula

I used to have a buddy that would have known this, but I need to figure out the proof and percentage of alcohol in a drink. Did anybody else pay attention in chemistry class? It certainly wasn't me

Do you mean, if a drink is 80 proof, that is the same as 40% alcohol?

If so, Proof is equal to 2 times the percent alcohol.

Disclaimer: as I remember my chemistry.

I'm sure he means there's a drink sitting in front of him, and he needs to break it down to figure out how much alcohol is actually in it.

No idea. But sounds like fun... so do tell once you figure out how it's done.

RC is right-ish. I started making my own Q-luah, partially because I thought it could be done better, and mostly because I can't stand to pay that much for a bottle of it. I started off with roughly 24 cups of coffee, and 2 cups of 80 proof rum, and I know that has to cut the proof down some.

Hey John, thanks! I think that was what I needed.
Terry, the stories I could tell about my friends Honey Mead... If only I could remember them :) He used to distill it down until it was as strong as whiskey! He made us several gallons of both regular and distilled for our medieval wedding. Good times.

I have 4.5 gallons of Orange Blossom honey mead clearing in a carboy. The primary fermentation began August 2006. I've racked it twice and plan to do so at least two more times before bottling. I hope to have it ready by late Fall 2007.

By the way, when the coffee and sugars had boiled down, plus the 16 oz of Rum, I ended up with a gallon, minus the bit that missed the funnel That would bring the total to 5% or 10 proof?

If it turns out ok, I'll gladly accept a sample! I've seen some home made mistakes that were gawd awful... like my afore mentioned friend's attempt at watermelon wine. *shudder*

Ok... you made my head hurt with that. Thanks Horse!:nads:

Is there a way to do that without a PHD? In English please?

hehe... buy a hydrometer. Follow the instructions it comes with to measure the specific gravity before it starts fermenting (we'll call this number "a"). When it's done fermenting, measure it again (this is number "b"). Take a - b and multiply that number by 1.05, then take that number and divide by b. Multiply it by 100 and you'll get your percentage.

Maybe that is why I'm thinking this isn't right. I'm not fermenting, just mixing predistilled alcohol with other ingredients. I'd love to make my own Rum and Vodka, but the Revenuers would have a problem with that.

wow, when I saw this thread title, I thought:

Formula for an alcoholic?

Take Horse. Add 2 fifths of whiskey. Presto! :)
