Need advise on editing continuous dialogue

I have clips of steady dialogue and I need to make edits.
I find it to be difficult to make the edits at exactly
the correct point. Like I would want to get the edit at the end of a word or such.
I'm using PP 1.5.
What is the technique used to make the cuts with precision?
The only way I can see to do it is to really stretch the clip out and try to see the audio wave form and make the cut 'visually'.

What is the best way to deal with this issue?

Chuck

Re: Need advise on editing continuous dialogue . I

I use soundforge and visuals (wave form) this technique is good enough to turn a plural into a singular by removing the "s" The only other way is to be able to rock the reel or scrub like on physical tape but that method frustrates the hell out of me. I think you can scrub in premiere 7 if your on pc. Hope this helps

Yep I just read back your on pp 1.5. You can scrub dude I haven't used that software for a while but as I recall there is a little slider under the monitor you can move back and forth. Don't know how acurate it is audio wise though

Re: Need advise on editing continuous dialogue

Wow. That's really interesting. I know that I can unlink audio and visual tracks...have done so and processed audio in Goldwave to tweak audio quality.

If I understand what you are saying, I can trim a clip on the audio track and when I relink the tracks, the visual will be trimmed in a corresponding fashion?

I assumed that if I trimmed the audio, the video would not be changed. If I can use the audio for editing, that would be much easier.

Using the waveform is much easier...every syllable is distinct.

Are my assumptions correct?

thanks,
Chuck

Re: Need advise on editing continuous dialogue

Well not quite. If you take the audio outside and trim it without filling the hole precisely you will end up with out of sync audio over time. I usually cut out the word then fill the hole with ambience. this can be a problem if your background audio is very active ie lots of background noise then you'll probably need a separate background ambience track with crossfades and clever levels adjustment.

Re: Need advise on editing continuous dialogue

Sorry Chuck I seemed to have gotten really out of sync myself on this one, (knew I shouldn't have had that last beer) I use Vegas for this which allows me to see the wavform clearly, trim it and the video is trimmed accordingly. Once this is done it;s exported back to prem 6.5 cut at edit points, placed on separate tracks and cross faded. hope this helps.

Re: Need advise on editing continuous dialogue

I use Pro Tools for dialogue editing, and nothing else. No other program let's me fine tune as well as Pro Tools. I once did a short with someone in it from Asia, and I recieved comments like "so and so must have worked on their english before this", when in fact, I was able to add individual letter and syllable sounds to make them understandable. I don't know of another program that will allow you to do this kind of work. Maybe Nuendo, but I'm not a fan of Nuendo.
