Need Advice...What Would You Buy?

The cheapest is the G2 from Sennheiser. The rest are not going to give you good sound for film. Remember, live sound is much more forgiving than studio sound. When you do film, it is studio sound that you are after.

I'm confused by your response. You say the "cheapest is" and then say "the rest" are not going to give you good sound. Maybe it's just late in the evening and I'm reading this wrong, but it sounds like you're saying that the more expensive are not going to give good sound.

I understand that live sound is more forgiving, if it wasn't....I probably wouldn't be asking for help.

Ok....I'm off to check out the G2.

Thanks so much for the referal, again....much appreciated!

I won't presume to respond for Jeremy, but I believe when he refers to the "rest" being unsatisfactory he is not likely talking about Lectrosonics 400's or Zaxcoms. Rather he is referring to those wireless that are less expensive than the Sennheiser G2 units.

And while wireless mics are convenient and almost ubiquitous nowadays, you'll get much better audio for much less money running a wired lav.

Marlene you should read a couple of the recent threads by Jon Oskar... we really hashed it out on the details of this stuff. If you just take one bite off the list at a time... you will still end up with some really good choices.

Most of the sound guys you talk to will suggest the same brands/models at a price point again and again. If you skip the hour or so of reading on the forums then you're looking at an ocean of choices... but we all wanted to get the best sound for our money... so all the good options are eventually on the surface.

I didn't get opinionated on mics by things I read on the internet... I bought lots of mics, trying each of them and comparing them to the next mic... then sold the one I liked less... and bought another... and so on. But I didn't make my initial choices totally blind... I did what I'm asking you to do... check the forums and you will find people describing mics in different ways. When you hear the experience of somebody who has owned a mic you are considering that may help you decide. When I bought my first shotgun there weren't too many people talking about these mics... about the only shotgun "test" I could find was a little blurb called lacfug.org or something like that... everyone quoted it a few years ago.

Realize that mic designs do not change very often... even when competitors come out with something better... and for some reason the reputation of certain mics is so entrenched that it's hard to convince people to listen to anything new. I'm not saying the me66 is a bad mic... but the 4073a is a great mic for just a little more money.

The G2 is another example of a great value... and it just happens to be Sennheiser... and ironically enough I was totally pushing the Audio Technica 101 for wireless 2 years ago... because then it was a good choice, but now Sennheiser has something better at this price. Ironic that it's AT or Sennheiser for both questions... Like you we all just want the best option in a given price range, at the time we're ready to buy.

Once again, Matt makes a completely fluid and well thought out point that makes me look like a moron for just typing without thinking. Thanks a lot, buddy.

Joe was right, I didn't make my point clear. I was saying that for effective wireless the Sennheiser G2 is the lowest model that works well. I asked Matt this question about... hmmm, two weeks ago? Completely ignored his advice, picked up a dirt cheap wireless system and it is complete ****.

Unusable.

My point was that live sound is more forgiving than studio sound. I see bands on stage using a SM58 all the time. Is that what they're using in the studio? Not if they are in a decent studio. That's my point.

The G2 is the cheapest 'acceptable' audio available in the wireless world. Thanks for making my point, Joe... Matt, thank you for articulating what I did not
