Need advice on upgrading my PC for better Video Editing

I need some advice from fellow redditors who have more experience since I'm not very computer savvy. You guys have a lot more computer knowledge than I do so hopefully you can guide me in the right direction. I need recommendation for parts AND I need redditors to tell me what I'm missing in terms of what I should be looking for. I'm trying to upgrade my PC in order to keep up with my video editing needs. Video editing requires a fast processor to cut down on rendering time, so I'm trying to upgrade my CPU. I'm also looking to bump up my ram (which is currently a meager 4gb - 2 sticks of 2 gb) to something like 8 (4gb x 2) or possibly even 16 gigs.
Here's where I need help:
From what I understand, my motherboard is only DDR 2 compatible and its also only AMD 2 compliant.
This probably means I will need to upgrade my motherboard to something that is DDR 3 compliant to keep up with the fastest memory sticks, graphic cards and CPU.
Moreover, from what I understand, Intel processors require an Intel chipset motherboard, and regardless if I stick with an AMD processor, new AMD processors are all AMD 3 socket-based.
I'm thinking of upgrading one piece at a time, starting with the motherboard and CPU (I've never had any problems with the Graphics Card, I think), but I need to know from you guys if this is what I should be looking for:
  1. A Motherboard that is DDR 3 compatible but is also backwards compatible with DDR 2. Moreover, either compatible with AMD3 or an Intel i7 Processor. It also needs to be compatible with PCI 3 (I think?) and perhaps backwards compatible with PCI 2 since my current Graphics Card is a PCI 2 socket based card. Would this be hard to find considering I prefer it to be backwards compatible with everything so I don't have to swap out every single thing and build a new computer?
  2. I need a fast processor: therefore I should be looking at i7 Quad Core (would it wise to get a 2600k?) or possibly those 4+ core AMD processors (they have 8 core processors now, right? I mean, what should I be looking at?)
Can anybody tell me if my priorities are straight?
