Need Advice on Glidecam camcrane 100

Hello Wise ones

I'm planning to purchase the Glidecam camcrane 100. Is it a good buy. How is it in comparison to other jibs in similar price range. As in an earlier post, someone says the camcrane can't pan, is it true?

What will be a cost-effective good tripod for the camcrane.

Thank you in advance.

Cheers

CamCrane 100 is discontinued, replaced by the CamCrane 200. Operationally look very similar, just round tubes used on the 200 instead of the square ones on the 100.

The CamCrane can make beautiful boom shots, but there is no provision for camera tilt or pan. You can do a "boom pan", swinging the whole arm around, but there's no way to make the camera head pan while on the arm. Of course, that's true of almost every low-cost jib arm.

It's a decent tool. Breaks down to a compact size for travel (only 3' 3" long) but it takes a while to assemble once you arrive. You need some decently heavy-duty sticks, I used Bogen 3068 legs with mine. I sold the CamCrane and upgraded to the EZ/FX, much quicker assembly and more options, but also more expensive.

I found GlideCam customer support to be superb.

Also look at the Cobra cranes, and there are others out there as well.

I second the Cobra Crane. I have one and it is compact, easy to use, and sets up in a snap. And best of all I can reach around 14'. Truly awsome.

Barry,

What do you mean the Glidecam can't tilt? Is this true of the others? From the demo videos (e.g., at Promax), it seems that these (under $500 cranes) can tilt. I realize that panning is another issue and boosts the cost dramatically (e.g., with the Varizoom pan & tilt head).

Re: Need Advice on Glidecam camcrane 100

The CamCrane has a fixed platform that the camera sits on. That platform cannot tilt or pan or anything else. It stays level and square.

Re: Need Advice on Glidecam camcrane 100

Speaking of panning, has anyone used this inexpensive alternative to the $3000+ Varizoom?

http://www.profeel.com/mtrpan.htm

It's only $120 but has the Glidecam name associated with it (very limited tilt, but pans 90 degrees).

I have reeasrched this pan and tilt attachment. It does have some limitation in it's angle of tilt and it's inability to accelerate and de-cellerate in its starts and stops.
I have seen some modified versions if you are electrically inclined.

Taylor,
Do you know if there are any mod plans on the web for those pan/tilt heads?

Hi, Barry, don't shoot me for asking this. :kali::Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)
Did you mean there is no way to remotely control the pan and tilt of the camera itself when it if boomed out of reach of a CAMOP? Coz, I was just wondering if you mount a fluid head on top of that fixed platform, as long as you lay down enough apple boxes to make stairs, a CAMOP can always operate the cam with the fluid head on the jib arm. Is that right?

How does the EZFX handle this pan tilt issue differently?

One more stupid question: if I have a tripod with a 100mm ball mount fluid head, can I mount this Glidecam Camcrane 200 onto the tripod somehow and use the 100mm ball mount fluid head on the camera end of the jib arm?
