Need advice on formatting a TV show pitch

Hello Everyone,

I have an idea for a TV program and have an interest in Screenwriting but I have a few questions for the board.
  1. When writing a pitch for a network/producer does the writing process differ depending on the genre of television you want to work in? ( i.e. Comedy , Talk Show etc)
  2. Are there any basic tutorials and/or templates that the forum would recommend to me to help me better understand the formatting process?
Any help, advice or resources you can give me would be a great help

EDIT: Can the administrators please move this to the correct forum pleae I'm sorry for posting in the wrong forum :)

The first step I took was writing a treatment and registering it with the WGA. A Treatment is a business plan for a television series - It maps out your concept /hook, talent involved, some crew involved, and budget. There are lots of resources on the web for samples. After a quick search I found this http://www.scripthollywood.com/id28.html

After preparing a treatment and registering it you will want to find a producer or major production company that has ties to the networks. You can of course try to do it yourself but often a network will not accept any concepts from unsolicited or uncredited sources. In my experience it is easier to work with a good producer that helps navigate through many of unknowns. If the producer likes the concept and wants to be involved you can move forward and they can help you contact the networks. Sometimes the production companies will have agents that negotiate with the networks.

Thats at least a start. - Hopefully someone else who has sold a show will chime in with some advice as I am still only in the negotiating process with my projects.
