Need advice for working with HDV

Has anyone worked successfully with HDV? I am editing natively in HDV (not apple intermediate - id rather not switch as i would have to buy a new drive) and I was wondering if there is a way to change settings or something (upgrade ram perhaps) to make it not freeze up on cuts. I have tried editing on my G4 tower (single chip 1ghz) and on a mac mini (single G4 1.42ghz) and both seem to have similar problems dealing with cuts. Any other HDV advice is welcome!

Those systems are kinda slow to deal with HDV natively. AIC might take up more bandwidth, but it's less processor-intensive. Also check to make sure that you have all of your Timeline's realtime settings off. You're in an HDV timeline, right?
 
Yes, I'm pretty sure all my sequence settings are based on an HDV sequence preset that I loaded up, and it doesn't want to render anything. It just jumps between every cut.. I figured it might be a processor thing, which is why i mentioned the speed of the 2 computers - but I was hoping there might be some way around it...
