Hey guys I have a canon hg21, can someone please give me some advice to capture a perfect sunset? Without everything being dark (even the sky) and having to much horrible flare. I don’t know how to overcome this problem and its not often i get sun where i live so its nice to make the most of it.

You can't have this kind of sunset all the time, Open your diaph to see the sky, place the camera well to do not see too much flare and wait , at a certain time, you're gonna have this kind of sunset stuff :)

No recommendations on filters or camera settings? My camera has a "sunset" setting, but I still get horrible flaring and dark skies.

use a polerizer filter... and make sure your lens and filter is clean or you will see little spots everywhere from the dirt/finger prints ect.

when i do a sunset, i usually iris down so i get the silhouette effect on trees extra... and it usualy gives it a great colour tint

1. Nature has to give you a photogenic sunset.
2. Adjust your aperture until you're exposed correctly (that moment probably won't come until the sun is touching the horizon) and by then you'll only have a few minutes to get what you want.
3. A polarizer won't do too much looking directly at the sun, however it may clear up some of the messy rays on the edges of a wide lens, but it won't be noticeable.
4. I prefer fast super zooms.
5. Stop worrying about being technically accurate and focus on capturing the mood.
6. Be polite: sunsets are people, too.
