Usually I come to the forums to provoke a discussion everyone can learn from. This time it's a specific question I'm seeking advice on. Sorry to fill the forums with my droll...
I made a film in 2001 shot on 16mm (matted 1.85). I supervised a semi-quick transfer of all footage to Beta SP with a colorist but never had the funds to go back and do the shot by shot session.
I edited on AVID and outputted to Beta SP what I think was AVR 72 (It was a step below the best since the suite did not have the SCSI necessary for highest quality - 75? I think).
But I needed to continue to edit and no longer had access to the avid. So I used my Beta SP (AVR 72??) output and transferred to mini-DV so I could import it into FCP2 at home (already years have passed, haha, can you tell...?).
So I know I went from 16mm to Beta SP and then to Mini-DV but to be honest it was years later and needed it done. The image looked great at the time so that's what I did. It was 2003, I made a DVD. No one I knew had a HDTV anyhow and my monitor wasn't even HD. At the time I thought mini-DV was pretty good being the same res at DVD.
If I were to make another copy for my reel or online or just to have a good copy by today's standards what should I do? I have all my EDLs. Would I take my Beta SP output and transfer to HDCAM or something? Then using my EDL make a new edit that way?
Specifically I haven't been able to find good info on what the quality is on my Beta SP output---since I don't have access to a Beta SP player I can't tell. Now with HD I wonder if Beta SP could provide a better result.
How much better is Beta SP (AVR 72 on AVID) than DV (mini-DV)?
Or would I need to retransfer from 16mm....... maybe not the cheapest option.
I really don't know what the settings were for the original transfer to Beta SP but it was done at Tapehouse in NYC. Is this is key I missing?
