I just want to know from you if present laptops play hd videos in wmv and hd avis well and without stuttering. After rendering my Vegas projects i would like to present them on a large screen. So im looking at buying a laptop for this.

I will install Windows XP Pro + playback software. Nothing else as i will dedicate this laptop to only using it for this purpose.

My personal laptop is 10 years old. Still plays HD 720p well and some types of 1080p (mp4 and avchd video files stutter or playback loses frames and the voice finishes first) also well. But 1 out of 20 times it may stutter. Hence i was wondering with all the tech advancements i think todays laptops are easily playing back HD 1080p videos ? Are any of you using current medium spec laptops like a core i3 and playing back smooth 1080p hd videos without stuttering ? Im looking at buying the HP 630 or HP 430. Also please let me know for just playing back of HD 1080p files would i need a laptop with a 7200rpm drive or will 5400rpm suffice ? My HD videos wont be longer than 5 mins in duration.

Im looking at a core i3 2nd gen, 4 gb ram, win xp 32 bit, with a 500gb sata (but it might be only a 5400rpm drive). Mostly it will have intel HD graphics 3000 or so inbuilt.

Do let me know guys. I hope i havent made the question sound too complicated. I just want to know how many of you with mild spec laptops are playing back smooth 1080p video. Your comments will really help me make a correct purchase decision.

Thanks a lot.

Why do you want to install XP? You'll rob yourself of RAM access, and that's kinda critical. Better to use W7 64-bit.

Hi David,

The laptop will be used with only one software installed on it. This software will be the one that plays back the videos. BUT its also what controls the lighting and sound for the presentation. This software will only run on windows XP and is a hardware dongle locked software. So if i have to go to a different OS then i have to buy their latest dongle which is many times the laptops cost. Hence the issue that im looking at a system that goes backwards and runs windows XP.

Well, that's a wrinkle. A laptop will perform differently under XP 32 than it would under W7 64. Hard to say what your specs would do with the older OS.

Not sure if it would work for you, but in case you're not aware, Win 7 Pro comes with a free right to download and install Win XP in order to run older programs that were designed for XP

Hmm yes but this is a finicky application. And if i buy the laptop and then find the entire software doesnt run on it, that would be a waste. The software which i have has to run on XP and it comes with a hardware dongle which is also XP compatible.

Actually there is another method if one buys a laptop with Windows 7 professional. There is a "downgrade right" to XP. For a business we have bought Dell PCs with Vista, shipped as downgraded to XP pro. You might wish to call Dell etc.
