need a squeeze!

ive done all my research and the only problem i have with the dvx is the lack of letterbox, from what i gather its not a problem in the states but in uk its fatal! the options seem to be anamorphic lens or post production. i dont think post would find the missing image! so i guess youd have to slice. my previous experience of supplementary lenses make it difficult to focus as the lens had its own focus ring, id appreciate my misunderstandings highlighted and experiences and recommendations of suitable hardware with pros and cons please, name names!

Re: need a squeeze!

Really gef, the onboard squeeze is fine. I have been just reviewing some footage shot 16:9 squeeze and I am knocked out by it.

Re: need a squeeze!

25p/thin in Squeeze Mode on a DVX will deliver a 16:9 image with just as much resolution as a "native 16:9" camera like the FX1 (in DV mode) or the PDX10.

Try it. You might like it.

Re: need a squeeze!

problem with inbuilt is its distorted i was thinking of old cinema technique of squeezing one way then other in post to get full chip quality or am i missing somthing?

Re: need a squeeze!

There is only one anamorphic adapter that fits the DVX - the Panasonic. However, IMHO (and I speak as an owner of the Panny anamorphic), the disadvantages of this peice of glass outweigh the advantages. If you are outputing to DVD I don't think you are going to 'see' the pixels you rescued. Shoot straight squeeze and spend the ana money on a wide angle adapter- but, as I say, that's just my opinion. Anybody else agree?

Re: need a squeeze!

I am pondering this same question. I am about to start shooting my documentary film and I want to shoot in 16:9. I got the DVX book and DVD by Barry W. Green and the difference in quality is 33% and quite a bit. Focusing can be done but with some training and autofocus is out.

It is not an easy decision. I was very torn between the DVX100A and the XL2. The LCD monitor and price was what made me choose the DVX100A but shooting native 16:9 without having to be a pro DP is making me think I should have forgone the LCD and just gotten the XL2.

Re: need a squeeze!

just use the squeeze mode and get the century eyepiece, it unsqueeze's.

i have one and i love it.

i just got a second dvx and i'm going to skip the anamorphic and just use squeeze and i'll definitely be getting the anamorphic eyepiece adaptor for this one too!

also, if you don't use the anamorphic you can get a chrosziel that i about half the price of the 411-53pk!

i have the 411-53pk on my dvx-100a with the anamorphic and on the new dvx where i'm just going to use squeeze i got the 440-01. the smaller matte box is also nice because it is quite a bit less unwieldly than the 411-53pk mattebox.

i sold off my xl1s because it suffered from lens lice! it caused a real stir in public, kept finding all these little heads looking in the lens! fine for actors they respect the big camera but a nightmare when your doing your french cinema :P (anna karina in bande a parte) or documentrys, check out my poll for your buying decision,

Re: need a squeeze!

Lens lice! ;D Exactly the sam reason I sold my XL1s in favour of DVX. XL1 great for cororate wheb the client can see the nice big lens they're paying for - but got so bored with 'lens lice' and the "do you have permision to be filming here?" jobsworths when filming documentaries. DVX is grey, discreet and unexciting to the untrained eye. Just don't wander round with the Chrosziel on!

Back on topic: dehilister - 33% sounds a lot but in reality you hardly notice.

Re: need a squeeze!

does anyone know if the new hd cameras, which are all 16:9 could just be used as dv cameras it would save any messing about with adaptors or squeeze mode, and make the dvx redundant?

Re: need a squeeze!

Yes both the Sony cameras offer regular DV recording, and the new Panasonic will offer high-def, DVCPRO-50, and regular DV recording.
