Need a sound or audio effect suggestions.

I am looking for some type of audio effect or sound. I am working on a dark, edgy drama and I am looking for a sound at the very end of the film. Something like a slamming door comes to mind but I'd like other suggestions.

Scenario: There are several gruesome murders. In the last scene the murder shows up at a kid's playground, then a quick fade to black--that's where I need the sound or audio effect.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

A contact mic recording of a barbwire hit is cool. You get the impact but it has this very weird rattly thing that kind of eccos away. Works well reversed also.

You could also go the opposite direction and kill everything but some close up breathing from your bad guy. That is pretty creepy and pretty unsettling.

It depends on what you want to do.

The big hit ending (if it's been quiet before it) will surprise the audience and you are telling something bad is about to happen. But it also kind of ends the discussion.

Something like the breathing tells them that something bad is going to happen but they are not sure when or exactly how bad and their imaginations will go farther than you could actually show. Also it leaves them with something is about to happen where the big sound kind of IS the something so there is no lingering dread.

Do you have a contact mic? You can make them pretty easily, or you can get ones designed for string instruments.

For those who might come accross this and not know, a contact mic doesn't record the sounds you hear it records vibrations in objects. In some cases those vibrations are what get translated to moving air and they are what you hear (as in putting one on the body of a violin). Putting them on other things like pipes, bridges, machines, fences, etc. allows you to ear sounds you normally don't. So in this case hitting a barbwire fence will give you a thin "hit a wire" kind of sound. But a contact mic picks up the fibrations IN the wire and all the little rattles that the barbs make.

For a sample of the kinds of sounds you can look up the Hollywood Edge series "Sounds of a Different Realm". Sound Dogs should have it and you can listen to samples. Ann uses a "FRAP" which was a custom contact mic, but you can get similar types of sounds with just about any contact mic.

Hmmm. Thanks David. I'll have to do more research on that. Have you run into difficulties using sites like this?
