Need a recommendation

I need to mic myself while holding the camera to pick up some questions that I ask the talent. My NTG-1 rejects off axis quite well so when I speak it is barely intelligible. I don't need anything serious, but I don't want to totally go on the cheap.

A decent wired lav would likely do the job nicely, with the added advantage of being an excellent tool to have around.

Additional dialog recording, usually. It would work if your questions never overlap with the person's answers, not nearly as nice as a lav.

ADR - additional dialogue recording. You go back after the fact and lay down a seperate audio track in your NLE for your portion of the audio. Provided you're not face on to the camera this is dead easy (no lip sync) and you can even correct any missteps from your live shoot. No additional expense for second mic setup. Just be sure to capture some "room tone" background sound to lay down with your adr track so it sounds seamless.

This assumes your holding the camera, asking the questions and filming the response all yourself. (worst possible scenario but often unavoidable).

Lav would be the other option, but now you're going to have to split tracks to the camera or use a mixer, control 2 levels, extra cost, etc.

Interview situations either 2 people or tripod and cable to get the mic off the camera is a far better solution. imho.

Seriously liking your avatar btw

I don't edit the footage, my editor is in another state. I don't think ADR is the most practical way to go because when I ask the questions, my voice can still be heard over the audio track and my editor would have to deal with that plus the extra time to add the track of my questions.

I do have and use a mixer so the lav is probably the easiest route to go.

Any suggestion on a model?

@smuir do you have a model number to start?
Depending on your budget, a Sanken COS-11 with a wired power supply or a Tram TR-50.

Its a pretty simple matter to run the subjects NTG-1 into channel 1 and the interviewer's lav into channel 2, although for sit-down interviews you may wish to reverse that and use the lav on the subject. One big concern in this setup is that if the interviewer is opperating the camera their mic will pick up all the camera handling and transport noise. There will also be some disparity between the sounds of the two mics, especially if the NTG-1's placement is less than ideal (eg. camera-mounted). This can be smoothed out in post, of course.

Thanks for the suggestions. My NTG-1 is always camera mounted as I hold it. No tripod ever. And no sit-town's so-to-speak..
