Need a good indoor mic

I am getting ready to shoot interviews and voice overs for a television series I am shooting. I am looking to get a wired lapel mic and upgrade my shotgun mic so that I can shoot the interviews using both. All will be done indoors.

1) I have had my eye on the Oktava for a while, should I get the cardiod cap or the hyper cardiod cap?

2) Is the AT899 wired lapel/lav mic a decent choice under $200?

Thanks...Paul

For single person stuff I'd go with the hyper. If you can afford it get all of the caps. I've started using my cardioid more and more when the mic is on a fixed stand and the talent is very animated and moving the head about alot. Seems to keep me on axis more.

dont know anything about that lav mic. At that price though I would go for the countryman b3 or emw.

Looking at the countryman EMW as we speak. It seems like it's phantom powered only, and could be used with a wireless transmitter if I choose to in the future. The AT899 is phantom and battery, but doesn't seem like it can be hooked to a wireless system. Am I reading correct about the countryman?

Hi:

I have an Audio Technica 1800 wireless system sitting here for an article and Audio Technica sent along an AT-899 to be used with it, so the AT-899 can definitely be used with a wireless, you just need to order the correct version, it is sold with may different connections.

Thanks PUREDRIFTING, that just about makes my choice for me. I was on the phone earlier with 2 audio guys from B&H after reading the sticky on lav mics. I ask the 1st guy about the AT899 versus the Sony 44B (he liked the AT). I asked the 2nd guy about the AT899 versus the Countryman EWM, he liked the AT899, but said the 2 were extremely close.

After reading up on the two it was down to power, the AT has both phantom and battery. I had read the EWM could be used with a wireless system, but could not find it to be true with the AT. I even called the 2nd guy back at B&H and he said it could NOT be used with a wireless system.

So if you say it can I think I will go with the AT899 giving me the option later to go wireless. I will look into the 1800 series later.

SHAWNEOUS, I will take a look at the AKG as well, but I like the price of the Oktava.

PUREDRIFTING, I just re-read your post. So are you saying the version that is used for the wireless system maybe different from the version used with the XLR? If so, is there an adapter I can use for it?

Please let me know how your tests go with the AT899.

Hi Airforce:

I am holding the mic that AT sent me for their wireless system. The model is AT899cW, it terminates in an "industry standard 4-pin locking connector" according to ATs description on the case.

I have already tested the XLR wired version, here judge for yourself, sound samples are in the article below. I tested most of the lavs on the market except those stingy people at Countryman would not loan us an EMW or B3 so I was only able to test my own B6.

Enjoy!

I've got to second the suggestion for the AKG 300b and capsules. I use the 91 and 93 caps (cardioid and hyper) and love them both. Very nice for the price, minimal handling noise.

PUREDRIFTING, I call AT and they gave me 2 options. 1) Get the AT899 and the XLRW adapter ($15), to plug into their wireless systems, or 2) Get the AT899CW (you just mentioned), along with the AT8537 power module (the same one that comes with the AT899).

Option 1 cost about $214, option 2 cost about $285, a no brainer.

Thank you for your input(s), I am getting ready to read your article.

Hey, PUREDRIFTING, I have read your article several times (didn't put 2 and 2 together and realized it was you). The article is the reason I started looking at the AT899 in the first place. Thanks again...

I bought an EMW wired for a G2 and I think it sounds pretty great. I also have a hard-wired version.

BTW, the Oktava (w/hyper cap) is a great deal and sounds terrific for a low cost solution (as the gang here have mentioned a zillion times). I finally ponied up for a BBG/Windjammer (being shipped) and really looking forward to trying it out.
