Need a Cut/Edit Keystroke!

I'm a Vegas user, and I'm used to being able to make a cut just by hitting one key. I can't seem to find that feature in FCP, and I'm very sick of having to cue up a spot for a cut and then go to the Razor button and then make the cut...SNORE! Do I have to assign my own shortcut key for this? If so, how do I do it?

Thanks!

For your attitude...

It's in the manual under keystroke shortcuts.

Take some time with the manual. You might enjoy it.

What IS IT with Vegas users? When they get to FCP they get all snippy and "Well, Vegas does this and Vegas does that..." Are FCP users who switch to Vegas that snippy?

Oh, wait...FCP users don't switch to Vegas.

Sorry for being snippy myself. But I swear I haven't seen a Vegas user yet who didn't cop an attitude when dealing with another editing application.

lol.... Too funny, Shane. I'd never really thought about it before but that insight is spot on. They don't seem to go back to Vegas.

To be fair we're comparing a $120 program to a program that costs ten times that amount. From what I've seen Vegas isn't anythign to sneeze at - and for the price its definitely got the most bang for the buck (and this is coming from a FCP user).

In my defense, I hadn't had my coffee when I made that post, :).

That said, I haven't had much "enjoyment" from the manual. It doesn't seem like it was written by an editor, but to each their own. And if everyone's solution in this forum is "READ THE MANUAL" then why bother posting? It would take just as much time to type a description of making a shortcut than to tell someone to read a manual with similar attitude. Anyway, I'll dig into the manual and see what happens.

I think the thing about Vegas is that most people can teach themselves the basics of the program, but with FCP the learning curve is a bit sharper. I wasn't knocking the program. I know it's awesome. The interface is just a tad harder to navigate than Vegas', especially if you're still kind of new to Macs in general.

Control+V makes an edit.... though you could map this to a single key if you wanted.

If you got to TOOLS / Keyboard Layout / Customize you can see the layout of the shortcuts (and change any that you want).
While its nice to be able to change them, I would caution you against changing too many things from the default settings right away.
Learn the software first before you start chaning it up - otherwise if you ever edit on anyone elses system you'll spend all day hitting the wrong keys.
:)

Also - use the Help menu (which is basically the full manual for FCP but searchable).
I still use it all the time and find it incredibly helpful (which they usually never are).

The 'B' key brings up your BLADE too...

Hitting it TWICE lets you cut the audio too.

I hadn't had my coffee yet either... though it was brewing.

Well, when you ask nicely, like you did the second time, you get a nice response that will most likely answer your question. Come out swinging and we all say RTFM.

As for ease of use, that is the difference between a consumer application and a professional one. Professional ones tend to be more complex.

Gracias, all.

I have to say though, I hardly consider Vegas 7 less than professional. It has allowed me to do everything I have wanted to do with editing and fx so far, though I am quite excited about making the move to FCP/Motion.

Nice. Never knew that one:thumbup:

All the "tool" short cut keys will cycle thru variants if pressed multiple times (the only except is "a" for the arrow/curser). For example, "c" gets the crop tool and "cc" gets the distort tool. "P" , "PP", and "PPP" will cycle thru the different pen tools.
