Need a bit of advice re: on camera mic noise

Hi all,

I have been using my Rode NTG-3 on my C100 for a few shoots and I have been getting a lot of bumping/handling noise with even moderate camera movement. Here is a pic of my rig:

and here is some video so you can see the movement/hear the problem: https://we.tl/ZOZaOSPvrP

Any thoughts/advice is appreciated.

Thanks.

The Duo-Lyre InVision Video Hot Shoe Mount would be my first choice if I were a cam person.

hm, I have an Azden mount that I can try and then move on to the Rycote if that doesn't work out.. Was looking at an AT 875R + coiled cable on the stock mount but it appears to be useless except for scratch audio :/...

Not sure if you were referencing the 875 as useless, but it is a very good budget mic. Not as good as a NTG-3 which you have, but the 875 is terrific for an economy short shotgun. It is less directional than the NTG-3: and that can be good or not so much. That stock Canon mic mount will be causing much of your handling issues. And I assume you realize that any camera mounted mic will compromise your audio.

No, the AT mic is supposed to be very good -- referencing the Canon mic mount. There must be some way to make the 875 to work in the stock mount because I often see videographers with that setup...

Firstly go to thin flexible cable..... the actual cable that you are using is designed for heavy rock and roll stage abuse.
Is there any shock mount rubber in the mic clamp on the camera, often people will fill out the mount with tape wrapped around the mic?

Thanks for the tip on the thin cable. Might try a coiled cable... Yes, there are rubber grommets around the mic (can't see them in the pic) so that it fits snugly in the holder, but hopefully it's a cable issue...

A thin cable might help. But it's the mount.

However, any camera mounted mic can be compromised by the operator making any contact with the cam. Even servo-zoom motors are enough to make a nice rumble. Since the mic will usually be at a greater than optimal distance from the talent, extra gain is applied, which just magnifies any handling noise.

Re coiled cables: I have found that they slap and bang around making things even noisier. Get a thin flexible cable instead.

Proper rubber washer for shotgun mic in that type of mount: http://www.ebay.com/itm/321631213322?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT It fits a 20-22 mic tube into the 1-inch mount ring.

Rycote makes a shockmount that mounts into the mount ring: http://mymic.rycote.com/products/sh...vision-video/invision-softie-lyre-mount-cca-/

I have just been using that tubular rubber washer on my camcorder and it has worked well enough most of the time.

You can try a thin cable, but I find that regular-old Canare star quad cable if clipped to the little isolator thing on the Rycote camera mounts works pretty well (though I will say I like the thin cables on the Rycote connbox for my bigger modular boompole windscreens.

If you get a thinner cable, make sure it's short and stiff enough to not flop onto the camera body (others can probably comment from direct experience about if this is an issue).

Yeah, I had a thin custom one made for my Rycote blimp by Gotham here in NYC -- maybe I'll have them make a short one for this purpose.
