ND filters

What are some of the good brand of ND filters? I've heard of Schneider and Tifen? Which which is better? I'm looking for .3, .6, .9 and graduated ND filters. I know that my EX1 has a built-in ND filters...but I just noticed that ND1 is (I believed) 3 f-stop and ND2 is 6 f-stop on the camera. I don't want to add that much each time. So that's why I'm looking into adding as much as I needed only instead of 3 f-stop each time.

While this post is up i would also like to ask a question about some of these filters. I was thinking on purchasing these: Filters And i was just wondering if you thought that was a good deal or not. It seems like it to me and i just wanted your guys opinion on it before i bought them.

But i dont want to feel like im hogin the thread charlie so i thought that maybe you would find these websites helpful:

Check these Cavision 4X4 glass filters:

FTG4X4GD/0.6 (0.6 graduated ND)
FTG4X4ND09 (0.9 ND
FTG4X4PL (Polarizer)

If memory serves correct, adorama.com sells them. Using a mattebox out front is something I'd consider nearly essential, for outdoor shooting in particular.

Dennis, I've read some pretty negative stuff about the optical quality of the Cavision filters. Don't know if its true or not, but I would investigate that issue. For HD quality, the Schneider, B+W and Heliopan among others seem to have a very good rep, but even Tiffen which was the standard of the industry for many years is reputed to have gone downhill.

That's all hearsay though as I have never compared them myself.

Good question. I use the Cavisions and have no complaints at all. Now that we have all these fancy pants rear illuminated charts to pop into our DSC labs "Ambi" box we're actually in a position to test their neutrality and any res loss. I'm utterly impressed what the equipment from the DSC guys last week. Great guys to chat with too.

Oh, and Lenny, I'm ordering a light meter tomorrow :-) One of our guys brought his film school issue light meter to the shop tonight and I promptly put it to work getting our Ambi box evenly back-lit from corner to corner. For that alone, I'd purchase one.

Thanks for those links. I'll check it out more. I did scan it a bit it's interesting how ND filters work. It sounds like if I want to get the most shallow DOF then I need to get the largest aperture possible and adjust only the ND filters. Good stuff to know.

So it seems Schneider and Tiffen are now the standard?
