Natural Light: Cheap, reusable diffusion

Hello.

Have been doing a bit of freelance work for a company who manufacturers static cling window film (they call theirs WallpaperForWindows). Obviously, these are great for set dressing, but it occurred to me that these would be great, inexpensive tools for the ol' lighting kit. A quick and dirty (yet reusable) way to diffuse and/or alter natural light through a window. The window sizes run under $30; the sliding glass door sizes under $70.

They have a full, frosted one that would give good overall diffusion (like rice paper but reusable). But, the frosted ones with patterns might give an interesting look -- a window cookie, if you will. And, the stained glass ones could be very cool too.

Since they don't have adhesive, you can just peel them off and reuse them. But, you will need to put them back onto the backing paper (or the side of your car!) to keep them from shrinking a bit.

If you try any of these, post with tips, tricks, or creative ideas. (Me too.)

Company's website is http://www.WallpaperForWindows.com/.

Looks interesting!
Especially the "Faith" design, could add a lot of production value when staging a church...

Yeah, think about the interesting/dramatic shadow that you could get from the cross. Would be a great way to foreshadow...pun intended, of course.

Actually, don't need to limit use with just natural light. They will attach to plexiglass, if you wanted to create a custom "flag". Just wouldn't want to use them to close to extreme heat. They hold up to full sun and moisture, but I wouldn't wanna have them up against hot lights.

I'm gettin' kinda excited about the filmmaking possibilities here. The initial thought came when I noticed the lacey wall shadow from sunlight coming through a window with one of the patterned designs. They have a large block design that would probably give a cage-like shadow. Again, could be used for interesting foreshadowing.

Heck, you could buy a full frosted and cut out your own design.

Awesome! I just finished shooting a doc in the UK and I would have loved one of these. Our lights and luggage were "lost" for over half the trip (and the shoot) so we made extensive use of natural light. Some of this stuff would have been awesome... then again, we probably would have lost that, too

That is pretty cool. Why don't you tell him he should make an ND tinted type? Just tinted with no pattern at all...
