NAS HDD for workstation?

When I see a review like the one below nestled in to reviews saying “best ever, fastest drive I have ever seen” and the like I have to ask myself, who do I believe?

Slow speeds and poor support - buy another brand.
HGST is a Western Digital company. If you have a support issue, you will be put through to the WD call centre in India. The people there did not even know that HGST was a WD brand and kept telling me it was not their product and so could not support it. This was done in broken, barely understandable English. The phone number for their support number is right on the HGST website, but if you call it, it gives you options for G-Tech support and WD drives, but not HGST. On top of all of this, these drives tested extremely poorly in terms of speed, when compared to Seagate drives and other brands. I had mine in a Drobo, and even Drobo were so confused that they went and purchased some of the same drives so they can run lab test. They confirmed: they are slower than any other drive they tested.

Yeah It's rather funny sometimes how one person can say "best ever" and another "worst ever" about the same thing. Sometimes it is a matter of opinion. Sometimes it's a variance/defect in product.
That's why I try to read a lot of reviews and tests on products before buying to try to size it up.

BTW your sig, "Carbonized Member" has been cracking me up for years. :)

I'm thinking about getting this HGST 8TB 7200RPM drive for my NLE workstation, but just installing it as another media internal drive. Specs look better than the Seagates I have in there now.

Any reason not to?

HGST make great drives, some of the most reliable on the market from what I've seen. Make sure to back up all media (maybe buy 2). I use WD Red drives for our NAS's and some HGST before I had to upgrade to increase density. I have about 30 running continuously for a few years without fault.

Ya, hard to tell what to think. But it looks like the two key negative reviews were not written by what B&H calls Verified Buyers. So perhaps they were talking about a different model drive, or maybe they bought their drives from a place that resells OEM and used drives that don't come with standard warranties and perhaps standard support. Just can't tell.

Hard to find good reliable reviews of hard drives because these days the key characteristic I look for is failure rate and lifespan. Seems like for most drives, if they last a couple weeks, they'll last a few years. And the data that Backblaze publishes is interesting; not our type of use and not every model mechanism, but still somewhat interesting:

Key thing seems to fit the current word on the street: HGST and WD's higher-end models seems like pretty good bets. But same old story: back up regularly and buy a spare now so you can get back up to running (with a backup) right away...

Also, looks like this deal will only be available for a couple of hours after B&H starts taking orders again tomorrow night...
