NanoSoftLight equipment question

I'm actually looking to build the NanoSoftLight from the "Light it Right" DVD. The video is a little vague about the equipment, especially the connector to the lighting stand.

I checked the website and all it says it "aluminum dowel". What does that mean?

What's the technical name for the connector of a light stand, i.e. the male end that the light fits on? And where can I buy these?

Thanks.

It depends on the light stand. The stand itself, if it is smaller, is going to terminate in a spud. Most stands that are commonly used are "Baby" spuds. AKA 5/8ths Baby Spud or Baby Stand. If the stand is larger it is going to terminate in a receptical, and these are of varying sizes, some of them are Junior stands and Senior Stands or Combo Stands.

If your light is small, there are a number of ways to mount it to a Baby stand. Manfrotto Avenger makes a device that screws on (designed for allowing the mounting of theater lights (pars) to light stands) that has a Baby receptical on it. You can find them on BHphotovideo.com

I hope this helps.

Usually you cannot buy just the spud by itself, unless you are buying the ones that fit into Mafer Clamps.
