Hey everyone im starting a production company and was wondering what legal matters (copyright etc.) must be taken into consideration and how i go about taking care of them.
thanks

Depends on what you want to name it. If you want to name it "Steev's Videography Services", I doubt you have anything to worry about, that should be unique enough and it'd have your own name in it, etc.

If you want to name it "Warner Brothers Studios", well, that could get expensive! :D

Also depends on what kind of entity you're forming (sole proprietorship, partnership, LLC, corporation, etc). And in what states you plan to be doing business. First stop should be your county or city business license office, to ask what their requirements are. If you plan on being a corporation and doing business in multiple states, you might have to execute a Thomson search for similar names to make sure the name you want to use won't be conflicting with any existing company in a similar industry, which would then cause confusion in the marketplace.

You don't copyright a name, although you could trademark it if you felt the name was exceptionally valuable and worthy of filing such paperwork; you'd handle that at the USPTO site.

Just have your atty ensure your name is available when you set up an LLC. A copyright atty can handle your trademark.
