Name the film the film that changed the course of your directing.

Ok this is semi-embarrassing at first glance, but also very true and understandable when explained. I was young and in high school, but:

Mission Impossible 2 (John Woo) and Bad Boys 2 (Michael Bay).

While neither of these films are great films (perhaps even BAD), I am thankful and proud of the change in directorial direction they brought. Not in a sense of brilliant cinema, art, character, etc. but in terms of directing photography:

John Woo and MI:2 featured a lot of really beautiful camera movement, and inspired my propensity to add movement to a great deal of my shots. The feedback I get is also very positive, referring to beautiful camera movements in my work.

Michael Bay, despite being a vapid and arrogant directing, has a knack for the visually stunning. I am thankful to have received many compliments on "visually stunning" cinematography, and I do attribute this to this influence. It has made me look at shot composition, movement, energy, and rhythm in a different way.

Anyway, two not very good movies with some really brilliant and influential cinematography that shaped how I shot and directed 10-15 years ago as a high schooler. Today I do a lot of documentary work, and bringing that visual flare and dynamic style into that work has been a major boon. Ironic how it's influenced by two shallow blockbuster movies!
