Name of instrument for the weird outer space music in old films??

Does anyone recall the name of the instrument, or machine, that made the weird outer space music in old movies? I heard it mentioned on TV recently but cannot remember the name or source from where I heard it.

Also if you have an iPhone or an iPod Touch, there is a great little app called "BeBot." It has a theremin sound, and quite a few other useful synth sounds (and a very fun user interface).
