NAB show specials on audio gear?

I'm looking to buy a Sound Devices 442 and am wondering if vendors or manufacturers do NAB Show specials on audio gear? I've been waiting for a used one to pop up but might just go for a new one if the price is right and NAB is next week!

At most of the shows that I've been to, it is not the manufacturer that sells the equipment, deal or no deal, but the various retail stores that can justify being at such a show, will have some 'show special'. Check the NAB exhibitor guide, and see who as a retailer is there, and then check their website for deals.

The other issue with buying at a show is getting it back home... these days airlines are charging for extra baggage... like more than one in some cases... so go with a light back pack for your underwear, and an empty suitcase for your 'deals'...

Shirts... pants... just wear the same ones for days... on the third or fourth day, people will just move out of your way... but the sales people will still be polite...

I dont know if this applies or not..
but Sound Devices, as well as a number of other audio companies have
a deal with their vendors to all sell at the exact same price.

It's basicly a legal version of price fixing
I forget the term for it.

So im guessing 1 dealer cant have a "special", but thats just a guess.

I've noticed that on a lot of audio gear. Schoeps and Sanken are the same way, you will rarely ever see list price deviated from. When I used to be in retail electronics in the 80s, Mitsubishi did this with their televisions, they called it "co-op ad dollars". Basically, Mitsubishi would provide the retailer with ad money to run ads that featured Mitsubishi televisions. If the dealer was found discounting the Mitsubishi sets, Mistsubishi would pull the co-op ad dollars from the retailer.

Personally, on one hand, I think it sucks, it is a hobbling of a free market economy where the market should set the price.

But OTOH, how many 788Ts can Sound Devices sell? How many CMIT5Us can Schoeps be selling worldwide? Guess that they feel that they need to protect their markets because their markets are actually really small and you don't need a new $2,000.00 mic every year. Wonder how they can do it without getting the DOJ breathing down their necks for price fixing?

yeah "price protection"= legal price fixing.

I used to sell consumer electronic sales- Mitsubishi, Sony, Bose etc.- they all do it. I pretty much figured Sound Devices did it as well since I see the same price for the 442 everywhere. The purchase may just have to wait then since I won't need it until June.

I wonder if any new portable audio mixers will debut at NAB.

thanks!

Well I do know in talking to Sound devices
the only announcments they are making at NAB is
-a Solid State hard drive version of the 788T
- CL-2 (boom fader remote for 788T)
- new firmware for the 7 series

No fader panel yet..blah!!!!
