Mystic River

After hearing so much about this film, I finally got to watch it tonight. And I got to say that the film was good.

Damn! I always knew that the killer wasn't Dave. That was obvious! They wanted us to believe in that, but I just didn't include him in my suspect list.

Now, I don't know how, but my brother was able to figure who the killers were before the cops did. He could be a good cop, hein? :D

Anyway, the film was very entertaining in my opinion.

What did you guys think? Any haters?

All the best

Fidel.

Re: Mystic River

Loved it. Great performances by everyone invlolved. Gritty, real. I knew it wasnt Dave but confess I wasnt sure if was Penn or not. Great film.

Technically speaking:

Did you notice the blowouts throughout the film? Im sure it was a stylistic decision but I found it distracting; maybe cause I look for that crap.

Re: Mystic River

I really liked the movie but found the end lacking...

The blowouts were a little harsh I thought, too. Looked like they had fun with the contrast levels in post lol :P

Re: Mystic River

Damnit, you gotta say SPOILER before you reveal who the killer agh godamnit

Well, I guess i could see it for the cool soundtrack

Re: Mystic River

Oops. Sorry my man. Always use caution when entering a FILM thread as you never know what will be said.

Re: Mystic River

I never start reading up on a thread of a film that I haven't seen yet, unless I *don't* plan on seeing it

Re: Mystic River

"Mystic River" is a great movie. It's the kind of drama that Hollywood doesn't make much anymore. They seem to be stuck making big event movies. "Mystic River" shows the injuried of the past never completely go away.

SPOILERS!!!

(As has been said, you definitely want to avoid these threads if you haven't seen the films discussed. I've made that mistake before and was all DIZ-AM-IT ???)

I liked the very very end when you realized no one was going to burn for the Dave killing, it opened up the underlying feel through the movie that even though Kevin's character was aware of what Sean's character really was, he turned a blind eye. And that's probably been the history of the friendship since they both went down separate paths. It was the "nothing changes" feel when you thought all the pieces were there to burn Sean's character and Kevin does nothing (probably not for the first time and not the last).

Re: Mystic River

I really liked it. But is anyone else in agreement that Tim Robbins should have won the oscar for best actor in a leading role instead of his co-star Sean Penn. Robbins had just as many scenes in the movie if not more and it seems that his character was more of a challenge to play than that of Penn. Maybe the academy felt it was Penn's time to win.

Re: Mystic River

Well they both one an oscar but Im curious how they decided which would go to the "Supporting" category.

Re: Mystic River

I guess they chose the injured one as the leading actor. Since he was the father of the victim. :)

All the best

Re: Mystic River

I heard that Eastwood did the principal shooting in a month and that it was fully edited about three weeks later.  The guy is amazingly efficient and confident in his vision.  Can you imagine throwing a feature length film together that fast--and then have it attract all that Oscar night buzz and critical acclaim?

Re: Mystic River

End did lack....but it was a solid solid movie.....

I noticed the blowouts right away as mentioned....then only time it was necessary was the "gunshot" scene.
Anyways, it is rare to see a movie as concise, and subtle as this, many themes can be pondered and discussed, and it can really be talked about.

The thing that I realize....in the end, if something clinched it, it wouldn't have the same feel to it. The way it left off leaves you like you were witnessing people's lives, rather than some mellowdramatic film.

As we saw, its not always a happy ending.

Re: Mystic River

To me, it felt like they tried to 'clinch' it, but failed...

I loved the movie up until the last little bit...

Re: Mystic River

The way I looked at the movie, is that we were witnessing people's lives.....
We didn't need some drastic Hollywood ending with a killing spree going on.....
It was very "real" and I think thats the reason it was so highly acclaimed.
The last little bit, I think it was birlliantly done... and I take back the statement I saw about it lacking.
It makes the viewer think about the movie much more......rather than have closure and not look back at the rest of the movie.
Sometimes people ONLY remember the ending, and judge a movie BY the ending.
In this case, you can't really do that, so many people who criticize it so much more had the ending been some sort of Hollywood crap ending....
anyways, enough drunken rambling

Re: Mystic River

It really seemed to me like they were actively trying to make you feel like these were people's lives, but something about it seemed forced to me.

I wasn't looking for a "Hollywood Ending" - I just felt that they did all they could to pull all stops and make it *so* not a Hollywood Ending that it got lost in itself...

Brilliant performances in it though, and overall it was quite good.
