hi
does anybody know how to get that effect used on U2's Mysterious ways video?

that wavy,liquified type of motion on some of the shots

I was thinkin' AE mesh warp tool

any suggestions?

Given that the video for Mysterious Ways was made around 15 years ago I wouldn't be surprised if it was an optical effect instead of a digital one. If I were trying to mimic it I would find some flexable material that reflected like a mirror, point the camera at the material, arrange the talent so that they appeared in the mirror, start the camera, and wave the mirror around. If I were trying to mimic it in post ... I wouldn't. I would come up with a different look. Doing that 100% digital sounds a little too daunting for my brain.

As a die-hard U2 fan I admit that I'm a little ashamed at not being able to tell you exactly how it was accomplished.

Now the one that I can't figure out is how the camera in the Even Better Than The Real Thing video spins around Bono on the vertical axis, without you seeing any kind of camera rig.

now talking about EBTTRT vid you really got a point, I have watched that thing an infinity of times and still can't come up with a solution .

what do u think of "the fly"

I personally like ALL of them, except for the last one "all because of you"

I really wanna get a "the fly" dirty look for my next project

Oh, I'm sure it could be done, but the amount of keyframes is mindboggling. Still, you've got me curious too. I think I'll have some free time tomorrow, so I'll start playing with some things and see if I can copy the look. I'll let you know what I find.

I actually haven't see that video yet. I usually only catch the videos when they release the retrospective DVDs. :'( Still, I don't think I've ever seen a U2 video that I didn't like. Numb was a little strange, but it grew on me.

I would think that copying the look of The Fly would be a heck of a lot easier than copying Mysterious Ways. Just play with some film grain effects and eventually you should find something you like.

The "Best of" DVD has director commentaries for all the videos.
You may be able to find some insights there. I've listened to several of them, although offhand I don't remember specifics about The Fly video.

I was able to make a pretty good knock off of the Mysterious Ways effect using Combustion 3 and a Pinch effect. It took me about 3 minutes to get something close. I applied a Pinch, changed the amount of distortion on the clip and then started animating a change in the pinch's X-axis and it created a pretty decent looking effect. I know it's not AE, but I'm sure you can do something like that with AE too.

so combustion will do it? I have to get an Open GL card before I can even mess with combustion

here's the new U2 vid, there's a shot that shows someone with the DVX is like 40-45 sec into the clip

I've done searches on stephane sednaoui
but nothing major has showed up
