Myspace Marketing: Effective?

I am wondering if anyone on this forum uses Myspace as a marketing avenue for your films? With almost 200,000,000 users last I heard, is this place effective in driving both attention and sales for small time film makers?

Would this medium lend itself more effective to niche films, such as action sports or documentary?

It seems to me a friends list of 20,000 highly targeted viewers would have a little weight to throw around. For example if you produce a snowboard film & release a hot new teaser with a clear path to purchase the DVD, would 20,000 friends hold enough people willing to buy the film to make the attempt worth while? Although I understand Myspace is the place for teenagers, so do any actually open their wallets?

What's the verdict?

Regards,
Tom

first of all, myspace is free, so that means free marketing (last time i checked). 2nd, the youth eat up extreme sports, so if you make a snowboard video that is fresh and new that stands out, people will watch the trailer and if thats good, they will want to watch the whole video. plus myspace is free, so it doesnt hurt you any.

another thing to do, is get on your local snowboard message boards and tell them about your new movie you are making and get them amped up about it... so when it comes out they are like wolves (members of message board) that have been staring down that little white rabbit (your movie) in the cage for months and then they finally get to have it. get on all the snowboarding messageboards. use them as a tool. but keep them updated on progress and keep them amped up how cool everything is looking and how sick all the tricks are.

now if you cant live up to what you are telling people (how good the shots and tricks are) then you will screw your self in the end and the first persons who buy it will definitely tell everyone on the boards to NOT buy it.

myspace is not just for teenagers... you would be suprised. i think the amount of 30 year olds + is more than half of what makes up myspace... dont quote me on that though, i remember reading that somewhere.

My film is an annual action sports flick in a small market, even by action sports standards. So for me, it's all about reaching my target audience and Myspace has shown so far to be a great way to reach out to these people. The true test will come when I start pushing my product to them. We'll see how they respond. I have high hopes, but not banking on it to be anything more than a nice bonus :)

Another avenue I'm going to test is using myspace to target locals to get them out to my local movie premiere. Not sure how this will work out, since these people will be less targeted for my movie, but well see if people will come out for a good show.

for targeting locals go put up flyers around your local community college or college or whatever you have. When I was in college we were always looking for something cheap and different to do that didnt involve studying...

That's a good idea! That's one place we didn't put up flyers last year. One thing that worked suprisingly well was placing invitation cards on the vehicles of the people parked at the large town fair. We'd target by vehicle type and it was very effective (ie, trucks would be more likely than mini vans to go watch a action sports film). Without spending a cent on marketing our premiere we had 50% capacity. So I'm shooting for close to 100% this year. Hopefully myspace will bring in a boost of viewers!

I've sent out bulletins to people on my friends list but have found that so many people send out soooo many bulletins that they become like spam and no one reads them.

It takes work to market something on Myspace. Alot of work. If you treat it like any other marketing strategy (read, seriously) it could be viable.
