My Reel...

So I recently updated my DP reel, adding in clips from the film's "A Strange Little Loop", "Wealth", and "Diner for Two", as well as tightening up some of the clips that were already there and even removing one entire project I now feel was weaker in comparison. Please watch and enjoy, and feel free to share any thoughts. Thanks. :)

(JUST in case it comes up: As some of you may note, the brothers Tuttle were technically credited as the official directors of photography of "Diner for Two", but we spoke and agreed that for the sake of our reels we can both take credit for it. In many ways DP credit on that project really is shared as I was responsible for staging and planning every shot as well as executing the actual camera work while shooting.)

I love your use of close ups.

Thank you. :) Though I'm a little bummed to see over a dozen views but no other comments. It makes me worry if it's just THAT painful. I mean I can listen to criticisms, that's definitely not an issue. Anyone?

My only criticism is you showed too much of certain scenes, imo. On a DP reel, I don't need to see how the scene played. I'm just looking for one great shot after another. If it were a director's reel, I'd wanna see how scenes play.
still, it looks really nice.

My only complaint is that it's a little on the long side. The first two minutes is stunning but after that even though the shots are great I begin to lose interest. And that's not to say its the footage lacking the ability to keep me interested - that is not it at all, like I said, the shots you've chosen to include are great. I'd say keep it a little bit shorter and you'll be in great shape.

I have to admit I didn't watch more than a minute of it but that is very typical for the viewing of a reel. It just doesn't take longer than that to guage talent.

Okay. So. I agree it's too long. I'd like to make it about 2 minutes (instead of its current 3 1/2). Any suggestions? Any shots or series of shots you feel are weaker and don't demonstrate something worth seeing? I'd like to trim it but am having so much trouble figuring out what to cut.

Agree with above comments. I watched it all the way through, but fought the urge to close the window after about 45 sec (simply because it started to drag on). Closeups are great. Biggest draw back is the length. You have great footage and I like the fact that you started with a ECU, rather than the typical title & contact card. Wasn't a huge fan of the music, but it works if you cut it down to 30 or 60 seconds.

Use only one or two shots from a scene - only the most visually powerful. Vary the pacing of the editing, some shots could be cut much quicker. The end with the jukebox seemed to drag the most. I think you could trick the eye into thinking you filmed twice as many projects if you took out some of the length.

I am learning for myself that just because something is powerful in its complete form, does not mean that everyone will watch it completely (in fact, some are turned off by the length and miss the point all together). I too need to create a clear, concise demo reel.

think about what you want to be shooting in the future and make your reel look like that... If you like Dick Tracy Cool Over the top color Comedy or wacky Musicals then the Music could work...

If you want to shoot dramatic stuff Lose the first Peice, dinner for 2 etc..

don't show me some bar shots where guys are talking unless its brad pit or your dolling through the handel of a beer picher.

...I want to see cool Shots that show your lighting, movment, color.... your style

oh and We loved Dinner for 2 at the qwest fest...

See that's strange to me, the shots in the bar are my best lighting I think. I spent hours creating that lighting setup. None of that was done with any natural or pre existing light sources, it was all very heavily staged. I thought it was a great example of lighting, color, texture, composition, etc.

I have to find specific shots to trim, and that is, for some reason, something no one seems to be able to tell me.

Okay, so I tried hard to widdle it down even further, and I took it from about 3:30, to 2:45.

If anyone has any other specific suggestions, specific shots, that you feel should be cut, let me know, please, I'll listen. Thanks.
