Hey

First off i wanted to ask if in order to capture video from my MQ tape to my computer do i need to buy another camera because it is bad on the DVX heads, or is there an external box i could use to capture the video to my computer?

Im pretty confused on how to setup my editing station, monitors in specific. Should I be running my NLE on an flat LCD for space and use a broadcast monitor for previews? Or will a CRT do?

I dont need a lot of ability out in the field while I shoot at the moment, but inside the editing lab I would like to have complete control. So im confused if DV Rack would be useful for me, should i use it to calibrate a LCD monitor? buy a viewsonic CRT and use DV Rack? spend 500$ on a broadcast monitor? not use DV Rack at all??? :(

I dont want to waste any of my money and I want to be using high end equipment with my DVX to create high end images, so I am asking for any suggestions or information you may have that could help me out. Thanks ahead of time.

Re: My monitor! Help please!

Whew, you asked a mouthful. Okay, here we go.

Capturing video off tapes onto hard drive- Yes using your DVX for capture will wear out the heads. Yes, you should get a small mini-dv camera to use for capture. Search the forum, around 2 months ago there was a huge discussion about what cheap cameras do the job. (This can be avoided if you use DVrack.) The external box you speak of is called a deck, and they cost WAY more than a cheap miniDV cam.

The monitor situation- I run my NLE on a flat screen and use my monitor for color correcting and previews and things of that nature. You will want to get as good a monitor as your budget will allow. (ie spending $500 is not going to get you a great monitor, you'll have to go higher than that.) For monitor choices, again, seach the hardware forum.

DVrack- the cool thing about DVrack is that it does so much more than just turn your laptop into a monitor. It's got audio controls, waveform and vectorscopes and oodles of other features. If you've got a laptop, it's a good purchase. As I said before, you can also get out of capturing by using DVrack, because it will stream the footage off your camera (which still records to tape) onto your harddrive. The only problem with DVrack is that because it is on a laptop, and laptops dont have the GREATEST screens, it isn't exactly the best for monitoring. But it does do the job, and very proficiently for the cost.

I hope this cleared up some confusions.

That's how I do it. If you want to do high-quality work you'll need a high-quality video monitor, such as a Sony PVM or a Panasonic BT-H1390 or something like that. Computer monitors are not adequate or proper for viewing/correcting video footage.

I dont need a lot of ability out in the field while I shoot at the moment, but inside the editing lab I would like to have complete control.
If you want a monitor that does both, the Sony 9L3 is a decent choice, although it's small for studio use. If you're not concerned about a field monitor, get a 13" or larger studio monitor.

You won't be able to buy a broadcast monitor for $500. You'll be looking at at least twice that to buy anything worth buying. And DV Rack is a very useful tool even besides its monitoring capabilities.

The monitor in DV Rack is a nice thing, but it's not its best feature. The monitor is limited to about 270-300 lines of resolution in the current version so it's not useful for critical focusing, etc.

I dont want to waste any of my money and I want to be using high end equipment with my DVX to create high end images, so I am asking for any suggestions or information you may have that could help me out.  Thanks ahead of time.

Re: My monitor! Help please!

is their anything like DVRACK for mac?

Re: My monitor! Help please!

Do they have one on the way? I was under the impression that they weren't going to develope an apple version. But then again, I'm probably out of the DVRack loop.

Re: My monitor! Help please!

Last time I was on their site they said no. But supply will follow demand, if not from them from someone else.

Re: My monitor! Help please!

You would think that apple would have something like that. But no. That sucks.
