My light blew up, twice

what do you think?

I just got a new ac adapter for my cool lux sl 3000. I was planning on using it as a fill light.

After plugging it in, I turned it on and it exploded into a million pieces.

The safety glass broke,too.

Like a lamo, I tried my replacement lamp. ( and did not have any safety glass) I blew up also.

I was careful not to touch the glass on the bulb itself.

What do you think went wrong?

the AC adapter is made by the manufacturer.

Re: My light blew up, twice

I don't know much about it but I'd be checking the output of the adapter maybe it's for another model. maybe the adapter is bad. i bought a new mustang once with a bad alternator blew every bulb in the damn car inside a week.

Re: My light blew up, twice

voltage too high? "+" and "-" reversed?

Stick the prongs of a multimeter in it and see what it reads, if it's really high, you might want to try contacting the manufacturer.

Re: My light blew up, twice

Did you have a DC bulb in it? If you had a 12v bulb installed, but plugged 120v AC into it, that's about the result I'd expect...

dc bulb. I'll be calling cool-lux tomorrow. what will anyone do about the $40 in lamps lost?:(

If anyone is reading this, it would be good to note..
safety glass is a good thing

it does sort of freak me to think what could have happened. like a bulb shattering and hurling its bits all over the place in someone's face. I'm not sure what exactly the safety did though, as the second time I tried a lamp, it exploded again (I was holding it far away from me) and shattered about the same.

Re: My light blew up, twice

that crazy, yes that will happen when too much voltage is transferd. I smell a lawsuit.

Re: My light blew up, twice

It's good practice to always always always have something in front of your lights, whether it's a safety glass, a lens or simply a gel...bulbs don't bust that often, but you want to protect your talent and crew in the rare events when they do pop.

It's saved my butt more then once when there was an undiscovered short in a light on set.

Re: My light blew up, twice

"You must make sure that the light fixture has the correct voltage lamps (bulb) installed before you plug the unit into any wall outlet (120v or 240v). A low voltage lamp  might explode when plugged into high voltage (AC). The SL 3000 will work with either low voltage DC (13.5v) or (120v and 240v) high voltage AC providing you first change and insert the correct lamp and proceed with the correct power cord."

the above material is from the product manual. I read that after I called the manufacturer, who said the same.  who knew?

so, Barry and J_Barnes win the hypothesizing...

anyways, the cost of this mistake is now at:
$124.80     for all the bulbs I blew and the replacement ones and safety glass I will have to buy.

now, why is a bulb $21.95?  geez, what a markup.
