I've heard if you drink, the IQ's of the people around you seem to go up relative to your own blood alcohol level. Kinda like getting reinserted into the Matrix. 
Love the term "bartendress"...sounds bawdy as all get out, like she only serves ale and mutton and can let you sleep on some clean straw bedding for a few schillings.
At best, maybe your disappointing outing made going back home a welcome relief.
