My Kit :)

Hi,

I am a newbie to lights (like so many other posters!), and I have put together what I think is a good universal starter kit. I just would like to run it over with some more experienced people on here to see what they think?

I have decided to go down the Britek route and piece together my lights from them. They seem the best value for money, and offer a high degree of versatility. My proposed kit comprises of 3 lights being :

1*G-300 + Softbox + 8 Foot Heavy Duty Stand
1*GY-650 + Softbox + 8 Foot Heavy Duty Stand
1*GY-650 or RS-1000 + 8 Foot Heavy Duty Stand

I can not make my mind up for my third light whether to get a 2nd GY-650 or a RS-1000. I think to help make a decision can someone tell me whether the RS-1000 and GY-650 can take ND Gels/Scrims with a softbox attached? I have a feeling that 1000W light will be way to much for "most" of the time.

Any opinions and thoughts :) Please...

Cheers

Robert

It depends. For shooting interviews in small offices, the 1000 watt may curl your subjects eyebrows. For shooting movies in big spaces, it will not be enough. No such thing as universal, just adequate for certain situations. Don't forget about dimmers & barndoors.

My kit http://www.VeniceDIgitalVideo.com/lightingkit.htm works for me. I often use the 300/600 on 300 setting, very nice when light/softbox is only 4 feet from subject.

Thanks Galt. I had planned to include barn doors as well but forgot to write it up on this board :lipsrseal Also I have decided from last night to replace one of the stands with a C-Stand (not from rostronics).

I think you are right, the 1000 watt would on an interview subject may knock them for six :) But I wasn't planning on directing the full blow to them, but my thought was to use ND Gel and Scrims to bring down the light....

However I don't know if you can use NDGels, and Scrims while using the Britek softboxes?? I don't think I can use the ND Gel as that clips on the barn doors, but unsure about the scrims. Come on, there must be a master of knowledge out there who knows this answer :)

I have that feeling 2*650's will be more than enough power for what I am trying to achieve. Since it will be mainly interior office/house shots. So 1000 or 650 ?

Go the 2 650W lights - running a 1k and scrimming it down just produces a ton of heat for the same light output as a 650W. There are a number of ways you can scrim/gel/diffuse the light and or the softbox - either peg to a barndoor/edge of softbox or put your scrims or gels on a frame on another stand in front. Using a seperate gel frame actually has many advantages - heat, not moving the light to change gels etc. But you end up with a truck full of stands and frames after a couple of years.
