My issue with introducing incidental characters

My rule of thumb, which may or may not be "standard" is if they only appear in one scene they get a generic "CLERK" or "CLERK 1". If they appear in multiple scenes they get a "real" name.

Assuming the story calls for a "silly", "sourpuss" or "flamboyantly gay" hotel clerk.

They need names.

Though I personally would give them nicknames (BUDDY, PAL, SWEETIE, FELLA, LUV...who works the graveyard.) But that's just my style.
