My IndiMatte Review

I bought the Indifocus mattebox recently and just thought I'd share my thoughts here for anyone considering purchasing the unit.

On paper, the IndiMatte offers an excellent range of feature at a reasonable price, but while it's a functional unit, I am not happy at all with the way it's put together. There's no rod clamp so if you want to adjust the unit on the rail you have to loosen and tighten an allen bolt at the bottom (which comes loose very easily and if you drop it you're out of luck). The hinge is held together by a bolt that comes loose every time you engage the swing-away, causing the mattebox to wobble on the rig. The French flag is on a screw that always come loose when the flag is adjusted up and down, requiring constant retightening. Compared with a Chroziel mattebox at three times the price, the IndiMatte offers more features (swing away, height adjustment) but I think I would have way less head-ache with a Chroziel unit. The poor build quality almost negate any savings the unit offer and I spent more time fighting with the mattebox than I would have like.

I thought about buying the indimatte as well, but what scares me, is that there is only one picture on their website! no descriptive diagrams, nothing. It's like "order this matte box, it's great, trust me."
