My HVX audio level is too low

I'm korean (sorry for bad english )

and..

I use my HVX in DV by
built-in mic with default audio setting (-50db and level nob is to 12 o'clock)
the sound I want to is just the location sound, not very clean and long range sound)

but recorded clip's audio level is too low and must boost gain(with noise) in FCP to use

change gain to -60db and rotate level nob ,
then I got satisfied level but too much noise.
I use MC100 XLR Mic too, and it's better than built-in but still under than normal volume.

is this normal?

I used XL1 and FX1, Z1 in my work awith their default setting
but there's no audio level problem.
so I think it's HVX's problem.

please help me...

  1. Make sure you set the HVX to LINE or MIC level as needed for your external microphones, and that you supply phantom power to them if they need that.
  2. You can only adjust the input volume of channels 1 & 2, but not 3 & 4. Whatever source you select to be channel 1 & 2 is adjustable using the dials, the other two channels are treated as though the (non-existent) dials for them are set to the midpoint.

thanks to reply, THoff.

I think alll switches and setting is correct.
input is MIC, not LINE and
I worked in DV format, 2ch format.

ch1, ch2 setting is correct too.
when built-in mic, ch1 is intl L, ch2 is intR
when MC100G, ch1 &2 is input2 (xlr connected)
and...+48V is on.

hmmm...
when I recorded with sony wireless mic, it was clear and sound level is satisfied.
but built-in and mc100G is always under than standard

I visit Panasonic Korea by this problem,
but AS technician said
'I don't know exactly whether it is normal or not' :zombie_smiley:

I think it is abnormal -.-;;

You should always adjust audio levels to get proper signal. Just like needing to adjust IRIS for proper video for each scene. "Default" is never right, just close. Don't ever settle for "close enough". :)

Your wireless mike should always have better sound then the "shotgun" on any camera. The properties of the mic and proximity to the sound source are obviously the reason for better sound.

As for the different camera's performing differently. Are you using all those cameras at the same time in the exact position? That's the only way to tell the difference.
If one camera is 5 feet closer, it will get better sound from the on camera mike.

It IS possible that the properties of the on camera mikes are different on the cameras you mentioned. One might be more directional and one might have a wider pattern. This is just a preference by the manufacturer. The pattern you like for situation A might be worse then the one you didn't like in situation B.

Sound is it's own art. Learn it, master it and you'll love what you hear.
I wish you luck.

very thanks for your advice, tedRR.
you're opinion for sound is absolutely correct, I know.
there is no 'reference'

my work is video journaling(?) for broadcast.
I record short clips in house and room, interview person within 5~8feet.
so... almost all camcorder I ever used recorded sound in 'usable level'
but HVX is not in my case. It is 'almost usable' at maximum nob control
voice of person in 5feet is around -24db.
so it's sound is so 'unnatural' it's sound is dumb like from radio sound in frame.

that's my problem.
there is no reference, but I think there is minimum of reference.
that is 'usable'

my opinion is not against you, tedRR
you're right.:dankk2:

all I want to know is every HVX is like mine or not.

I think what you're talking about is the HVX's built in mic. Right? the HVX and the DVX have really bad on-board mics. Never use your HVX without at least a shotgun mic. I was trying to follow your thread, hope it helps.

oh...really bad on-board mic......
ok. I think so, too
I'm testing until now and built-in mic is 'there is no answer'

maybe I have to use my MC100G..

very thanks for answer, sonic freak

and thaks to replied everyone..
have a nice day.

I think the onboard mic on the HVX is quite good for what it is. It is omni-directional so it has a very wide pattern. It is NOT ideal for picking up a voice in a room from 5-8 feet away as it will pick up all the ambience and any other noise nearby. What you need to do is use an external mic placed within 2 feet of the interview subject. Plug that into Channel 2 and set your switches on the side of the camera as follows:-
Ch 1 select = input 2:
Ch 2 select = input 2:
Set phantom power on channel 2 if your mic needs it.
Now set your level controls so that one channel is metering in the -12 to -3 range and then set the other channel about 6db lower, so you have a safety in case the talent suddenly speaks louder and peaks your first channel.
Be aware that when you import the clips in your NLE you will have 4 channels of audio, with ch's 3&4 being the onboard mic, which you will probably want to delete. Then also select either channel 1 or 2 for the dialog. Preferable the loudest channel if it didn't peak.

Is yours a non-USA model. So is mine, serial number is A6NCxxxx. I have the same issue only with on-board mic. Just adjust it higher (above the 12 o'clock setting). Make sure ALC is on (found under RECORDING setup screen). . .
