My Fostex DC-R302 video review

Your review is appreciated. I've seen other's you've done on youtube. You guys were using a variety of setups to record with, some of that information would be helpful. Some of the recordings did not sound very good either. Your Vimeo sound quite a bit better though https://vimeo.com/46283192 I know the new RM/RA 333's from Juicelink are competition, sure wish I had a comparison.

The B&H review if you have not seen it, is a bit more professional.

Hi Ritwika,

Very good review.

I bought a Fostex DC-R302 here in Canada Feb.2012.
I've had issues requiring firmware and hardware updates.

A few questions:

1. When you purchased your unit did the USB functions work or did you have to send it in for a Hardware Upgrade before the USB would work?

2. Does the USB functions work with Windows 7 ?

Thanks

have you had reliability issues with your fostex? I have lost audio on shoots before multiple times because the file creatiion process just failed somehow, and for not apparrent reason.

Hi Vertical Invader,

Hope all is well :-) I have an early Fostex DC-R302 bought in Canada at L&M (I'm thinking it was an early dealer demo unit which I wasn't pleased about) - USB function not working (on Mac) so it was suggested that I send it back to Erickson for the update mod. Haven't done that yet - I'm not thrilled about the idea of a non factory mod.

I see that you sent yours in. How'd you make out with that? Is every function working for you and if so, how's the USB functionality? Does the unit work properly as a audio interface,"live" in and out of the computer? Any latency issues?

I see there's a firmware update on the Fostex website ver. 1.2.2 that apparently solves some major recording issues - I haven't yet put the unit through any heavy production use and am kind of glad because I can't afford to have any audio file issues whatsoever.

Thanks for sharing your experiences - much appreciated.

Have a great day,

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Dave,

I'm still waiting for my DC-R302 to be returned from the Canadian distributor ( Erickson) with the hardware mod, it's been gone almost a month now.

The sales rep. from Fostex Japan informs me that they are still working on a firmware update for USB to work with Windows 7, it should be available as a download from Fostex next week.

Haven't had any major problems with the unit, in fact I've been very pleased with it so far.

I'll give it a good workout when I get it back just to be sure.

I purchased a ZOOM R-24 to get me through the absence of my DC-R302 , it is very nice , battery powered , 8 track recording at once, mic pres are a little weak though, worth checking out for location sound recording $500.

I'll check in when I get the unit back and give it a workout.

Nice little user report.

Fostex *are* very good at listening to customers - when I did a professional review of the original Fostex FR-2 I found a small issue which Fostex fixed very fast and I had the firmware update in just a very few days.

But they are *not* the fastest - that honour goes to Nagra who fixed a problem in less than a day after they heard about it from me. From me sending them the e-mail quite late in the evening, to receiving the update was about 40 hours. That includes the 12 hours overnight when they did not see the e-mail and the testing after they fixed it. The time from when they received the e-mail and had the update ready for testing was less than a day - *That's* speedy and, in my opinion, takes the top prize for speed of customer service.

Hi TVI,

Great to hear from you. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Wow, almost one month for a hardware upgrade? They must be waiting for parts from Japan? This is why I've been avoiding sending my unit in - not exactly prompt service. It scares me to think that if I ever need my unit serviced in the future it's going to be nothing but delays and hassle. I guess this is why Sound Devices and Zaxcom have happy customers.

It will be nice to get the USB audio interface function running, since it was a major advertised feature. I'm hoping they also get the infrared DSLR camera start/stop feature working for the Canon 7D and other DSLRs in a timely fashion.

Thanks for mentioning the Zoom - it looks interesting and priced right for indie location projects.

I'll look forward to hearing how your DC-R302 functions when you get it back.

Until then keep well!

Cheers,

Dave
