My first wedding.

And I'm a little nervous. I took off my M2 and follow focus. I was hoping someone out there with a little experience could hook me up with some knowledge. Things I might want to consider or do. For instance, should I buy an on-camera light for the reception? And can someone recommend an on camera light for my DVX? Thanks to all or anybody who can help.

Is the reception outdoors? What time at night? Go to the rehearsal and find the owner of the venue (or employee etc.) Ask about the lighting & figure out where you stand. They might be able to help you light better for your purposes. The less you shoot with a huge spotlight, the better.

The dance floor should be lit, if just for safety reasons. Sometimes the DJ has a strobe light and that's it. Better than nothing.

I find that the HVX is extremely well prepared for low light. I can't give much advice on DVX. But sometimes you just have to get creative.

I shoot receptions in available light. Sometimes they are a bit dark, and you can brighten them up in post, but you get noise. I try to get close to the subjects to get a good image, but also, the room is dark, and the video reflects that, so it it "real". I also brief the bride beforehand, so there are no surprises, since everybody always wants to turn down the lights.

I find the on-camera lights distracting to the guests. This is not a controlled stage shoot, so you take what you can get. Just let the client know what to expect (call it "artsy").
