My first thread | DP REEL 2011

Hey guys,
My first thread on DVXuser. I just finished editing my 2011 reel last week. Yeah 3 months late.LOL. Have been busy working, and save enough to get the AF-100 last month, my first camera, hopefully I can shoot more and improve my reel.
Anyway want to have some feedbacks from you guys.

Hey Ben,

You have some good looking stuff, one really easy thing you can do to improve your reel is just stay consistent with your font, instead of using courier in the beginning and whatever that font is at the end....pick one.

As for your footage. Is there any reason why some of it is squeezed into the frame and has black on all four sides? Is it because it's lower resolution than the rest? I went through the headache of trying to get all my footage to play nicely in the same timeline, and what I ended up doing was finding my lowest resolution clip and then transcoding everything to that size. That way even the one shot you have in 720 or 480 will still look good. You do lose the option to put your reel on vimeo in HD, but if you want to do that you've gotta either lose the clip with the low resolution or just take the hit and uprez it.

I really liked the shot of the guy coming into that room that's just like, black. I feel like it shows you're not afraid to play things dark...I also really like the one of the girl and guy looking at each other towards the end around 1:10. It's a good moment.

There are also a few clips that are just pretty murky. The shot of the women leaning into the microphone...The one of the girl laying in the couch....even the one before it with him and her at night. Just a bit too underexposed and lacking contrast.

There's also another shot I think you should probably lose which is the guy in his bed in the all white room, with the white shirt. Production design is just really lacking and I think it's ultimately reflecting poorly on you.

Also, there's a series of shots at 1 minute where we see him step up onto the toilet and then he looks over the side of the stall, but he's looking in the wrong direction? You can just flop this shot no problem to sort of save that scene

Just some thoughts, I'm sure you're probably thinking the same thing as me, but never hurts to let you know what I think.

Good work! I know you're probably as excited as I am to shoot more and replace stuff. Keep it up.
 
Hey Ryan thanks for the kindly comments. Will keep them in mind for my next year reel.
Yeah we do think the same. Hopefully new footage from this year will replaces the bad clips.
