looks good, it shows a lot of different styles. You have a good eye for color, typography and composition. The only comment I have is the opening 5 seconds looks choppy, motion blur might help it. And also contact info, if I ran into this on some random site I would not know how to contact you.
You have some footage that, while it looks good, doesn't really tell me anything other than you know how to put cool looking footage in your reel. It at times seems to leave the motion graphics realm to turn into a reel for cinematography/videography. The only one of these shots that works is the one that does the time ramping with the girl in the club, because obviously that's a post effect.
Forget about showing off "editing" in a reel. Good editing can't be "shown off" as it's seamless. Instead, show effects and motion graphics and stick to that.
Thanks guys I appreciate the comments. I'm trying to work on freelance projects to build up my reel and there are definitely some things I would like to change. Back to work!
Editor or motion designer, pick one. Don't confuse us, Gary said it well so I'll leave it at that.
Next, drop the tutorial stuff, which looks like everything you've done is based on a tutorial. I don't care that you know how to recreate something told to you step-by-step. Do the tutorials, just don't apply them 1 to 1 to your work. Pull the techniques out and use them creatively to create new work. Copying is copying, period.
If you need help with that, come up with an idea first then figure out how to execute it. Tutorials really mess up the correct way of thinking for people starting out. You should have an idea that is not dictated by your skill level that you concentrate on how to make. Think up things for social causes you're interested in. Write up a little brief/script and work within those confines. Pick a theme and a technique and see what you can make. The point is have an idea first then worry about execution. At first this will be frustrating, but after a while you'll appreciate the benefit of this approach and so will your wallet (assuming you want to do this professionally).
