My First Explosion Test

very good, you are on the right track, I would eliminate the black stain on the upper left corner towards the end, you sell the effect pretty good and I don't think the stain hitting the lens is necessary

very good initial. I would say that you need to remember a sense of scale. So if the flames coming from the ground are far away they cant flicker as fast as a closeup small flame. they need to sway and move with a larger sense of scale. The explosion hits work but then the flames look small which doesnt match up with the size of the image. The flames dont need to be physically larger but they need to move like larger flames would.

you can also put some haze over the further explosions - that will make them feel farther away - remember that there is atmospheric haze everywhere that adds up over distance.

just a couple suggestions to make it even better

If you weren't following a tutorial, I think you should write one. This is excellent for a first attempt!

Very nice. I agree, the lens splat took away from the effect rather than added to it.

The flames coming out at the same angle as the ground takes a bit of reality away. Flames burn upward, not sideways. I know, I know, this was a first attempt and you probably already knew that. I'm just being picky and it is a note for the future.

The camera shake also helps sell it. Nice.

I actually liked the splatter on the lens before it was pointed out.

EDIT: oh yeah, it is blood. Go Kramer!
