My first DP reel...

Hey guys...

It occured to me that I've spent too much time looking at other reels and productions. So now I finally made my own.

Hope you enjoy it.

Some really nice stuff in there. My main complaint is that you obviously have a tendency towards the "overblown" look. That in itself is not a bad thing, but it's a very specific look that's not useful for a lot of styles. It would be really great to see some darker shots, perhaps with a focus on shadows/color. What you have is great for what it is, but it does feel limited.

Thanks for the comment. I agree... I would love to have more dark feels to mix in, but unfortunately I haven't been in over anything yet that I though merited the dark look. Hopefully something is picking up in the next couple of months that will allow me to play a bit more with the actual lighting and composition of the shots.

Looks great.

What productions were in the video? What equipment did you use for some of the shots?

Good work, no complaints from me. You have your style, so you showed it. My only complaint which really isn't a complaint is probably the length. Maybe if you could make it 90 seconds that would be more idea. Reason being is people lose attention quickly, but yours isn’t too long. Good job!

Thanks... it was a mix of 75% FS100 and 25% 5D mkII. Nothing fancy, I haven't gotten the footage yet I did with the RED Epic, since it was all as operator rather than DP.

In retrospect you are totally right about the lenght of the video. I gotta remind myself to cut down and keep the cream of the cream ( if I can be so bold about myself ;) ).

How short clips could I use before it becomes a huge mish mash of footage rather than something that shows what I've done?

My first demo reel was close to 3 minutes and at the time I didn't have enough footage to have it be 3 minutes, but I come from an online music media background and stats have always shown that people don't stay and watch certain things of that length. My current one is a minute and some change.

You can put a bunch of stuff in it, but I would definitely get the point across of the clip you have in it. Not so much showing stuff to show stuff. If you have a clip that uses a slider, show the entire transition you know?
