My first big project. Is premiere handling it?

Hi guys,

I've been working in film for a little while now but not extensively. I'm currently editing a DVD documentary in Premiere that's going to be around the 1h30min mark. I've got 2000 video's imported in my project. And I'm starting to get full PC crashes when saving, or particularly auto-save. I can't tell the cause of this. I'm editing off of an external hard drive. My project file (the PP file) is at 137MB right now. And with the research i've done that's apparently really bad. This is my first time going about doing a project this size, am I doing something horribly wrong? What is the most effective and efficient way to go about something like this? How do you keep your project file sizes down?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What version of Premiere?

Right off the bat, I'll say that editing off of an external drive is not ideal. Doable, but definitely not ideal. Especially for large projects.

How are your drives set up in terms of media, media cache, etc...? How full are all the drives?

CS6. I'm editing off a 3TB hard drive that's almost full.

I know editing of external drives isn't ideal but I don't have that amount of space on my computer. Is there anything I can do to help the process or is there anything I'm doing wrong?

A drive that's almost full is going to run slower than one with plenty of free space. I'd say your best option is to purchase a few internal drives and transfer the footage to those if you can.

Do you have the latest updates for CS6? If memory serves, there was a bug in earlier versions where the project file would become massively inflated in size and slow everything to a crawl. I remember dealing with it at work a few years back.

What are your other system specs?

I'm editing on a laptop. It's where I have to do all my editing. I travel for a living so I kind of have to be mobile when it comes to editing.

16gigs of Ram
i7 CPU 2.50ghz
GPU gtx880M
windows 8.1

So I can't exactly install new internal drives. Well I could, but still not enough for this project or other ones of this size.

I'm running PP 6.0, I'm guessing that's probably not the latest version?
I've read about defragging your external drives, do you think that would help it at all? I guess I'll try deleting some useless stuff off that drive or move it over to another.

CS6 sometimes has troubles with huge projects, although I did a few which didn't have insane effects on and it handled it fine
