Hi,
I am moving into larger work after finishing some short films. I have recently bought a dvx100a and a formatt matte box (fm500). The Seller that sold me the matte box said that i could have 40% off any 2 filters. I have never used filters in my work before but know how much of a difference they will make to the quality of the movie.
I am starting work on a '12 monkeys' style movie (flashbacks and time)!!
I am looking to achieve MAXIMUM film/movie (hollywood) look to the picture.
What 2 filters would you suggest i buy first to achieve the best filmlook to my movie.
Thankyou for your help
matt

However since you want a film look I suggest looking at the Soft & Diffusion filters.

Re: my first 2 filters! what to get???

thanks Tyler for the swift response and helpful advice!!

I am thinking perhaps of going for the UV filter and the Polarize filter for my first 2.

what is your opinion on my choice for creating what i have stated in my first post?

Re: my first 2 filters! what to get???

You can never go wrong with UV and polarizer. Especially if you are shooting outside. You can always get a clear protective lens. I use them, but I know a lot of people that don't like to waste a slot in the matte box.

Re: my first 2 filters! what to get???

Wait until someone else responds though. I don't want you to base this decision on my response. There are A LOT more knowledgeable people in this forum that can assist you better.

Re: my first 2 filters! what to get???

Year, alot of people go on about UV and Polarize so i think i will go for them.
However i will wait like you said for other opinions.
Cheers for the helpful advice Tyler!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: my first 2 filters! what to get???

UV and polarizer are probally gonna be used the most. NExt I would get a black promist or softnet, and a Ultracon/Lowcon/Digicon... followed by that would be some sort of warming filter, a Coral, Suede, etc.

Re: my first 2 filters! what to get???

since the camera has ND's... its not a priority except for grads.. But any grad I consider a luxury rather than a neccesity, and a polarizer can work in a pinch if you are dealing with too much light.

Re: my first 2 filters! what to get???

Polarizers are tricky. Used properly, they are absolutely indispensable and can make a tremendous difference in your image. Used pell-mell, they can be either a) worthless, or b) worse than worthless because they make your shots not intercut well.

Polarizers can cut through reflections, which makes them very valuable.

If shooting outdoors, I would always prefer to have a polarizer and to stage my shots such that they get the maximum benefit from the polarizer. You have to shoot at 90 degrees to the sun to get the best effect, and the effect is dramatic. Skies are one thing, but try shooting something reflective (like leaves on a tree) and you'll see an amazing difference from using the polarizer.

Problem is, if you can't structure your shots properly so that each takes the same amount of polarization into effect, then you can end up with shots that don't intercut well at all. So be careful, use it properly, and it can be quite rewarding.

Filters you must have: a polarizer, and a UV or clear for lens protection.

Filters you want: ND Grads, plus some way to mount them. Along these same lines a blue grad, or maybe a nice sky effect filter... depends on what you're shooting.

Filters you may want some day: Black Softnet (see Jarred's filter DVD for the reason why), maybe a close-up filter for close-range work and shallower DOF in tight room situations.

Filters you don't need: most warming and cooling filters (can do that in-camera).

formatt 4x4 filters

formatt 4x4 filters

so what would be the difference between a formatt clear and a uv filter as far as picture quality goes? is there a noticeable difference between the two? i see a sky1a, uv haze2a, and 2b. is the sky 1a the most commonly used? thank you.

Re: my first 2 filters! what to get???

I would buy the UV straight out since it is less expensive and use the discount for the polarizer, black promist or softnet
