My DP has lost his mind ...

Always supply the tape then it is all yours.

If a carpenter agrees to build your fence for free if you supply the materials because he needs some proof of fence building skills to use on his resume. Does he own the fence once he is done? No he owns the pride in showing off his work on YOUR fence though before and after photos , his detailed drawings/ plans or coming to see it in person.

If you agreed to pay him an amount of money and then didn't pay him then he would have a case. If you and he never had any agreement more than food/transport/copy/credit then as long as you complete the remaining conditions of your agreement (copy and credit) you have fulfilled any legal obligation you have to him.

There are two sides to a coin. It would be good to look carefully at both sides first before jumping into conclusions.

There's a nightmare DP and then there's a nightmare Director. There's one who has both sides heads and then there's the one who has both sides tails. Thus, the nightmare...:)

I'm afraid not. A DP is an artist who owns his creations (even on your film) until you get him to assign the copyright, in writing, to you. A DP is not a fence-builder. Bigger question is whether a fence-builder is an artist too! ;-)

Erased all the tapes of a FEATURE so he could re-use them! He's since disappeared from the scene in this area. Good riddance!

Hm. He's "disappeared" huh? After doing things like that I bet he has.

Are you kidding me?! That's unthinkable dude... I can't even imagine someone being that stupid or careless...

Yeah backups really do save you.

I never hand tapes over to nobody. If you ever have to definitely make back-ups or try to get all the footage onto your drive. Unless that person is your most trusted friend/relative/spouse keep your tapes on you and even then it's questionable, LOL.
