My beginers lighting kit.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, when it comes to lighting and audio, I know very little. I used to have a guy that knew them like the back of his hand, sadly, he is out of the country. Anyways.

Here's the deal, I need some lighting gear, stuff that I can use on shoots, and more importantly, that I can learn with. Right now I only have 2 SV photo floods. I was thinking of going the route of these Briteks:

Should that pretty much have me covered? Anything else I'll need as far as lights go? I know I will need bounce cards and gels and things of that nature. But as far as lights go, how does that 4 light set up sound?

Re: My beginers lighting kit.

So, aside from asking an embarassingly beginer question, I also spelled "beginners" wrong in the topic of this thread. This is going well. :P

Re: My beginers lighting kit.

For starters... what kind of work do you do?

For me, I find that I rarely use softboxes. I like to use low-wattage hard lights to suppliment existing light. I've got a few Briteks and they're great. I'm planning on picking up a couple more of their 200w or 300w lights. So far, I've found them most useful for dramatic work.

That being said, there's no substitute for a nice 1k when you need the power. You can always scrim or bounce a high-wattage light but you can't give a tiny light more punch. So, basically... I'm not a lot of help right now.

Re: My beginers lighting kit.

Haha, well thanks for that Horse. I do lots of short films, subjects and genres vary, so I need some good all around lights.

Re: My beginers lighting kit.

Briteks are great for beginners, I classify them as "prosumer" lights.  Not quite the same as full-on professional lighting instruments, but plenty close enough and way good enough to learn on.

Two softboxes might be a little overkill, especially just starting out.  A decent kit might be one 650 w/softbox, one 650, and maybe a couple of 200's or 250's.
