My Batch Export via Dynamic Link Function Experience

I thought I would post this subject since, majority of us, myself included, are still wondering why batch exporting was not a feature of PP2.0. And is there a work around with the new Dynamic Link Function?

Also any tips, experiences, or workarounds that any of you might have found, please share them.

So I thought I would start and share some of my recent experience with this new functionality. My main goal was to tap into the rendering queue of AE and save myself some steps. It worked, kind of. What I found out is dynamically linked function to be pretty much one way, AE’s way. Certain effects would not translate to AE from PP, those where dither dissolve and constant gain (simple effects); after I found that out I quite adding any effects within PP2.0.

The project I’m working on is pretty much web based videos, so I’m speaking specifically to streaming format. It did safe time, but it’s not the Holy Grail as it relates to a solution for batch export, which is a major over sight on Adobe’s part (concerning PP2.0).

The videos consisted of 10 Green Screen Videos which involved keying out the GS and replacing with a PSD background; adding audio and exporting to a streaming WMV format. This could easily and quickly be done within PP1.5 or PP2.0 or any version of PP; actually that’s the way I had been doing in the past. But I found two things I did not like – baby sitting my sequences – click to export – wait – click to export…etc; and the keying quality was very average (of course this could of all be done in AE with a higher quality).

End result? I found it best to limit what I did in PP2.0 to trimming the video and adding the audio track. I did have to engage AA2.0 to fix the constant gain which would not translate to the dynamically linked AE comp.

After that I dynamically linked 10 sequences to AE (which gave me 10 AE comps of course) and ended up finishing up the all of the effects in AE. Placed in rendering queue and went to bed and let the computer do all the work.

Remember my statement? I say this because I would not cc, key, or apply any effects within PP2.0 and then dynamically link to AE comp to take advantage of batch export. The effects will not transfer. All the work needs to be done in AE.

I’m not bashing the dynamic link function just trying to shed light and give an experience. It really just gives u the ability to add AE’s comps to other projects – Encore and PP – change on the fly within software project, etc…really nice stuff.

Any other experiences, suggestions or questions; by all means post up!

Peace!

dewman,
Thanks for the write-up. Sometime soon I need to start exploring the new dynamic link stuff. At the moment I'm a bit buried and don't have a lot of time for experimenting. When I do I'll be sure to give this a spin.
Thanks,
Dan

Yes, Dynamic Link works just one way - from After Effects 7.0 to Premiere Pro 2.0 and Encore DVD 2.0. One can not import a Premiere Pro 2.0 Project to After Effects 7.0 using Dynamic Link.

Definetly give it a spin, Teledan. It is a nice feature; one thing it made me is shapren my skill set with AE - which is a good thing :).

Thanks, Averdahl!
