Here is a short breakdown and my thoughts of the gears we are using:

Panasonic AG-HPX170
This 24p P2 High-Definition Camera is the newest successor to the revolutionary DVX100 line, that became a bit of a step up from the famous AG-HVX200. The HPX170 is in many ways similar to the HVX200, mostly except the the obvious sacrifice of the tape deck to decrease the size of the HPX170 bringing it to a similar size to the DVX100. Furthermore, a strong professional feature was added to this camera that brings the HPX170 up a tier to go against many pro cameras, and that is the HD-SDI output. With the HD-SDI output, you can use many professional monitors as well as connecting directly to a computer to record via I/O box. Purchased from BHPhotoVideo.com

Zacuto Support System
Up to date, there is no other company that matches the lifetime accidental warranty that Zacuto provides. Though their products are already sturdy and reliable, the chances of an accidental drop from the Empire State Building then the New York human traffic kicking the Zacuto products onto the streets that gets ran over by the overwhelming vehicle traffic, is still a possibility. Therefore, just collect products from the streets, send it back to Zacuto and say you accidentally dropped it, please replace, and they will give you a brand new one, at no cost to you! Maybe shipping... but would you complain? Purchased from Zacuto.com

Redrock Micro
Company that started with mostly the sales of the M2 35mm Adapter, Redrock Micro has come to grown with the industry providing camera support systems that are so intuitive that an 8 year old potential cinematographer can put together. Maintaining the sturdiness, the price for purchasing redrock micro will probably be the best bang for your buck. The MicroMatteBox as well as their Handheld Shouldermount is so affordable and sturdy, why wouldn't your trick out your camera with these? Especially with the swing-away function of the MicroMatteBox, any other matte box that includes swing-away are at least 4 or 5 times its price. Purchased from Redrockmicro.com

Letus
Letus Extreme 35mm adapter has earned their reputation for "The 35mm adapter to get". With the 1/2 stop light-loss, exceptional build quality, as well as the stunning picture results, other competitors may need to up their game compete with this bad boy. Purchased from Adapterplace.com

Ikan
The revolutionary iKan V8000HD is from my knowledge, the first most affordable HD field monitor out there. This monitor have a/v passthrough as well as component passthrough. Monitor can be battery powered by a Sony L-Series battery as well as 12v DC-IN. If you have a 35mm adapter and don't have a monitor yet, this lightweight exceptional monitor should highly be considered. Purchased from Zacuto.com

Zeiss
A second consists of 24 frames, that's 1440 frames in a minute or 129,600 frames in a feature film. If contrast, sharpness, and pure quality is something you like to show off in those 129,600 frames in your feature film, do consider Zeiss lenses as part of your package, the Contax/Yachica Zeiss lenses fit on a Canon EF-Mount is affordable and can go a long way. Best thing about these lenses are that the focus barrel turns the same way as cinema lenses. Purchasead from Keh.com, eBay.com, & Adorama.com

Looks oh so sweet. Would love to see some footage with the HPX/LX/Contax setup.

What are you using to hang your monitor?

i have a film i can probably show finishing up in like 2 weeks shot w/ this, ill post a private link to it when i have it. aside from that, edge to edge is pretty bad [on 28mm f/2] due to no optimization kit present.

zacuto large zAmerican arm is holding the monitor up. it has 4 locations for it to be mounted.
2 on back, 1 on the grips, and 1 on the top of the cam.

the rig here is about ~$12,800 retail w/o lens+camera, around ~retail
including the sachtlers video 14 II w/ cartoni 604 tripod.

w/o tripod = ~$10,000

i think laser did shoot out once, i tried again... didn't work =/

LOL. Tell them how much you spent on your Contax set, Willis.

BEAST.

But the greatest stuff you can get, it is. The rig puts mines to shame when they're side by side. And I haven't even seen it like this yet in person.

=T

lol, yea... dam, now that i think about it... maybe i should've just gotten the red...
after i got little important "stuff" from redrock+zacuto, this setup just seemed to work, a little heavy, but so is a red, yes i know it isn't a red, but it is fully loaded.

contax Zeiss [made in Germany] lenses:
28mm f/2 - $950
35mm f/1.4 - $1000
50mm f/1.4 - $230 (made in japan)
60mm Macro f/2.8 - $450
85mm f/1.4 - $650
135mm f/2 - $1000
180mm f/2.8 - $500

Total lenses - $4780

... wow... wth?

Thanks Willis for posting. Very sweet rig.

A couple of ??s

1. What are you doing with this bucks up rig? Shooting a feature or ?

2. What do the batteries on the back power? The monitor? It doesn't look like they power the 170.

Thanks,

Dan

dan,
we shoot our advertisements, industrials, shorts with this. when it comes to time producing a feature, that's where a Red comes in. but we're shooting a sponsored music video w/ Red in january, so i guess my rig gets a bit of rest, it works an average of every other week.

aside from that, it tries to go on rentals as much as it can to get itself paid off.

the battery in the back acts as counter-weight and yes, powering the monitor. isn't it a waste to spend $900 for counterweight and power up one monitor? hell yes, therefore, it will also be powering up litepanel, operator 4" SD LCD, and a better 7" HD-SDI LCD when i get all that when i can afford to of course.

hi weixang623, Can you tell me if the ikan monitor is worth the money for focusing, as I may order tommorow if you or anyone else can confirm this works well for the hvx for critical focusing. thnks.

reem12, pm'd

the price i told you was zacuto @ retail. but if you ask them for a discount, they'll give it to you. im not talking mad discounts, but you'll save some dough @ the end.
