Mxl 604

I read somewhere that the MXL 604 is a good alternative for the Oktava MK012 since it is hard to find and the price is inflated. Does anyone have experience with this mic? B&H has it listed at $99.00, but when you put it in your cart, the price is lower. I'm really tempted by the price, but I want a good mic (for mostly indoor use).

Inflated price? Since I know a number folks who have them as backups for their Schoeps, I think your prices are out of whack. A really decent mic for under $500 is a very good deal.

MXL gets their mics from one of the Chinese plants. So quality control could be an issue. I have heard some good reports on MXL mic but they had all been modified. Out of the box I think they were a bit noisy. But they might be OK.
Cheap and quality are not mutually exclusive but there often is a relationship between price and quality so I would do a lot of research before buying a $100 mic and expecting great things.

Oktava hard to find? And inflated price???

If you have any concern you should do a search here on this site and you will see about 200 posts praising the Oktava.

And the price from the Sound Room is like stealing the mike. In fact, after ordering it you should just drive yourself to the nearest police station and turn yourself in for theft.

And don't let Matt find you because he is going to make you write on the blackboard "Oktava, KSSM (with soft bands) and BBG" 500 times.

Thanks for the help. I guess I'm wrong about the inflated price, but I read somewhere it used to be even cheaper before Oktava lost their distributor. But by no means is the price at the Sound Room bad...it's very reasonable. I was just trying to pinch pennies.
