MXF to Quicktime ?

We have been filling up Terabyte drives quickly with MXF files from the HVX-200. Can we import into FCP, use the files from the Capture Scratch disk as our "new" original footage?

By going to QT we will cut the storge space required in 1/2. I just want to make sure the QT files will be of the same quality, Timecodes, seperate audio tracks, etc.

Is this a good solution? $500 terabyte drives are getting expensive.

Sounds good.

keep your backups, tho...

You'll have to convert before FCP can use them, but the "rainbow bug" is a known OSX issue in this transcoding. That doesn't meen your footy is bad, mostly it means a re-import.

Moral:
keep original p2/FS-100 volume copies untill you're all done.

Although the QT files will be of the same quality as the MXF files they will not be your "originals". At some point if you ever wanted to take the footage to another NLE system the MXF files would be much better to have than QT's. Also if you only have the QT files on your scratch disk, what happens if the drive crashes?

How about $300 for a TB of storage?
Buy 3 of these and 1 external case that you can just keep swapping out the drives as they fill up.

I clicked the New Egg link but wasn't quite sure what I was looking for there. I'm editing with a new IMac and new MacPowerBook Pro. Any suggestions. A TB for $300 sounds great.
