Muzzle Flashes

Muzzle flashes aren't realistic anyway, so why worry? Just make it look cool.

Realism rarely plays a part in movie making. Look at any cool gun sequence from any movie and you will see them. We aren't looking for realism here, we are looking for parts of the movie experience.

And how, exactly do you make a gun fight " look cool" with no muzzle flashes? You don't.

Follow the links above.

I your clip, you need to watch your shadows with the mask you have going on there. The shadows are not realistic, especially on his (your?) hand. The back of the thumb would not be lit up, for instance. Also, I know you asked about the flashes, but honestly, I think SFX will help a lot going to a final product.

fxhome.com has a nice program that has muzzle flashes built into it. Take a look at the site.

Stick to the topic guys. He is looking for a method to produce action style muzzle flashes in AE. Not get into a discussion on the reality of flashes themselves.

Stay on topic.

I wasn't suggesting he stick to reality. I was saying he should tailor the muzzle flashes to what looks cool, right, or interesting, not to what is realistic. Skippyfx said he was looking for "realistic." Realistic would be no daytime flash at all. Very boring, like watching a "the making of" clip with the sound of cap guns. So I said go for the flash, not realism..but it can be easily overdone.

Very true, and I misread your post.

Personally, over the top can be pretty damn impressive. Matrix and Equilibrium come to mind. Talk about over the top. In Equilibrium they even had th flashes look like the Gramicon symbol in spots.

I've looked online for some of the shells specifically designed to produce extra muzzle flash, but can't find them.
